Hey guys, I dragged an old SRV from out behind the shed, she's a little rough, but I'd like to get it running for my younger brothers to ride this winter. They've pledged to do the work, and we've got a financial backer, so I got a couple questions....
The engine is cooked, locked right up, suspect - rusty crank bearings 2 years ago (which is why it's back behind the shed) sooo...options are...
A)rebuild (rather not)
B)replace with another SRV (if attainable)
C)replace with phazer (is this possible)
a phazer engine would probably be more readily available, and cheaper. The drop in CC's wouldn't be of too much concern, considering who the main riders would be. Is this possible??
Second concern, the track is less then desireable, do these sleds use standard 121" tracks?
Third, it's got a brand new (well 3 years ago new) Comet clutch on it. I have no idea which model. This clutch needs to be pulled, so what do I use? A comet clutch puller and which one, or an SRV clutch puller....
and thats about it for right now, any other suggestions are welcome...
Thanks!

What year is the srv? Some years came with a comet that required a Yamaha/comet puller. If the comet was added later it needs a regular comet puller. The difference is the threads the puller pulls on are metric on the Yamaha/comet but not on other comets.
As for the phazer motor, anything is possible, but the two engines mount entirely different.
Yamaha has continuously produced the 540 mill in the srv from 1980-current. exell-v's, srv's vk540's. You should be able to find one of these sleds pretty cheap.
The 1980 model has a 15"x115" track all the rest have 15"x121".
I would not try a rebuild,, If the bottom end is cooked you will put over $1000US in the bottom end alone and probably another $3-400US in the top.

Wow thanks for the reply..it's an 88 I believe...the comet was added after, so I'll be looking for a regular comet puller then....
so the phazer motor is out of the question..I was down at the local scrapyard today and they had one, but I guess we'll move on...
thanks for the help!

I too have an old srv behind the cottage. I know it semi-worked before I put it away but its been sitting for 5 years now. And I was deciding on rebuilding it or scrapping it.
I would rather put a new engine in it and clutch than rebuild whats there. I am assuming that the engine is toast.
Let me know how its going for you russ. I am semi motivated now.

If you guys end up replacing the motors in your SRV's and wanna get rid of your old motors for parts let me know as I would be interested in them, since it looks as we are all located in ontario!!!

I've yet to locate an engine, but the prices i've seen for used phazer motors make me think twice about this project...why spend 900 for a motor when you can buy a used running entire phazer/srv for a 1000?
