: Helix Question
kowalcs 08-11-2004, 01:30 PM I have a 2002 ZL800 EFI SS. I'm wanting to get a little bit more low end out of it and a buddy of mine suggested putting in a 60/52 helix in the secondary. I really don't want to mod the sled much, just minor clutch work. Do you guys think this particular helix would give me what I want?
yes it could work, but it may not work also. what is in it right now?
kowalcs 08-12-2004, 06:41 AM It's stock right now. So, I'm not sure exactly what helix came stock.
kowalcs, find out. sometimes putting a different helix in your sled will work. but sometimes it takes more than just a helix depending on which one. When i had my 02 zr 800, i had a helix of simular angles in the early season, befor we started trial riding and were just playing on the ice. It worked great on the ice, but as soon as i hit the trial and got in some soft snow, the sled wouldnt get its rpms up and lost a lot of power. So i had to go back to a less of a helix, and drop a few degree's. What i found worked pretty good was a striaght 55 helix. it worked in my setup on my zr 800. but it may not work in your zr 800. Just remember a sled that works great on the ice may work like crap on the trial. You really have to find the happy medium sometimes if you dont wanta frigg with your sled when the trial conditions change.
kowalcs 08-12-2004, 11:38 AM Maybe I should just be happy with what I've got and be done with it. If I wouldn't have lost to a 670HO last year, we wouldn't be having this "conversation" right now. Sometimes it's best not to mess with things.
JCTENT 08-12-2004, 01:35 PM you could just get a clutch kit, i guess it all depends on where you like to ride...
kowalcs, if you lost to a 670 that was reletively stock there is something up. ether find a good clutch kit for trial riding or take it to somebody that can help you set it up. It may not be in the clutch, it may be something else.

There's nothing wrong with my sled, I just want a little bit more. Those 670HO's are very capable of taking an 800. He was also beating my brother's REV800 with that 670. I just want a little more pop. I think I might just start experimenting with different helixes. That's a simple mod.
MUSKOKA800 08-13-2004, 08:50 AM Mines an '02 ZR800cce.
The stock helix is a 55/53.
I changed mine to a 60/48 and found it had much better midrange grunt in the twisties but I lost much top speed.
I've acquired a 57/50 to try next winter. I'm also considering the purchase of some Supreme SuperTip adjustable flyweights since I have an aftermarket single pipe sitting in the garage I'd like to try as well.
kowalcs, that is a good working 670. I was out last year with a 670. the guy that rides it knows his stuff so i am guessing it is a great working sled too. i lined up against him and his friends rev 600 with my f6. I had a big smile on my face at the end of the 1000 feet.
also, my brother put a speedwerx pipe on his 01 zr 800 last year. it helped on top for sure. he probably gained 3 or 4 mph on top end.

Was that a 670HO or just a 670? I'm talking HO here. I think they only made them one year and they are fast.
kowalcs, it was an HO. i know what you mean about the HO's being faster than the others. Myabe he just had a bad day or something. But he didnt make any excuses, so i figured it was liget, i'll have to find him again this winter and have a rematch.
