Any advice for a visiting Scotsman trying to get his mates 98 Excitor running so I can see if skidoo'ing in Canada is as scary as his Honda blackbird is in Scotland!!
It hasn't run since it cut out a couple of years back and I 'unsiezed' the engine, cleaned out the carbs and bought new chokes last winter. It now starts, but runs badly , spits some mix back out the carbs and eventually backfires and stops. I had a go this summer but want to get it going this winter. I guess the next step is to check the reed valves but will listen to any advice...... :cussing:

Hey Dougie-r, welcome to SW. I have vistied Scotland and drove a rover all through the highlands. The glen Coe area was amazing.

Did you drain the gas tank?>> refill with good fuel and a small amount of 2 stroke injection oil.

New spark plugs are a must, and possibly new plug wires and a CDI unit. It can be tested to see if it is within tolerances.

Does it have a fuel filter? If so replace.

Get the carbs cleaned and rebuilt if needed. If not sure, pay someone that knows to doo it.

I am sure others will have more to add.

Good luck Permafrost

Soooooooo, the 98 exciters they did not make were not reed engines, interesting , you never know what you will learn on here.

Thanks for your reply . Its an 89 not 98, my fingers got mixed up and some of your members were pretty quick with the sarcasm( but not with the help). We put in new fuel, renewed all fuel pipes. and cleaned the carbs. If they didnt have reed valves then I guess we have to check they cdi.
Cheers

While your at it, why dont you disconnect the TORS sensor (throttle override sensor) they are very faulty on the older yamaha's most of them get disconnected anyways, like I did on my 1989 SRV540.
