Ok, we have totally pulled the motor, went through it and have it all back together to run,,, went to pull and we have no spark.
we pulled the coil and put it on mine and it sparked fine (using the coil, plug wires, and plugs off the wildcat), so I make the assumption that they are all good.
I figure we have a switch gone, so I unhooked the 4 prong connectork, no spark. I then checked the blue/white,,,black/white wires going to the coil and get a reading that jumps up to 14 to 16 volts when I turn it over,,, I check mine and I get that same number on it.
Now I feel that I have power going to the coil, and I know the coil works, yet I get no spark when that coil is hooked up to that machine,,,,

coming out of the stator, you have the 4 wires going to the 4 way plug,,, then there are 4 other wires, 3 of them go together to one plug and then to the cdi. the other is on its own (black) and it also goes to its own plug and into the cdi. I assume that this is the ground cut off that when it shows a ground, the cdi will not fire,,, so when we tried starting this at first, it was unhooked,,, we also tried hooking it up and grounding it and we got no spark at all,,,

any ideas out there???? thanks in advance
Brian

I am not sure if the 89 wildcat has simular circuitry as my 91 EXT special but if it does then you may want to make sure the black wire that terminates at the CDI is not open when all switches are closed (run condition). On my machine the black wire (ignition on/off) must be a closed circuit to run, not open. If you have a bad wire or connector preventing continuity the plugs will not fire.

I purchased a factory service manual from CAT for my year and model. This is a great asset dealing with every component and how to test everything. I highly recommend this. Makes maintaining these very high maintenance Cats simpler.
I spend almost as much time fixing as I do riding. Many problems are associated with bad engineering. Motor mounts too weak, main frame riveted where it should be welded,...I could write a book. Hope you have better luck.

I did connect the black wire and it had no spark, with the 4 way hooked up and unplugged. with the 4 way unplugged, that should unhook my saftey switches if I am correct,,,,
the signal should be a ground and I even grounded the wire,,, so that should bypass that unless I am looking at it wrong, which is very possible,,, thanks for the advice and I will take a look at it,,,,

On my '88 Wild Cat all wires in ign. circuit must be connected to make a complete circuit. If there is a bad connection it will not fire. Get a shop manual from Alpha or Browns or your local dealer, the price is well worth it.

Hope this gets you going in the right direction

Well, I still have a problem hitting the refresh button... I didn't see that Puree beat me to the punch before I told this story... My topic is located at 88 Wildcat Ignition Wiring (http://www.snowmobileworld.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41696). Thanks for the help everyone!
