: 4 Stroke Dirt Bikes Compared To 2 Strokes....
RacerX408 08-25-2004, 10:58 PM well this is my first even experience riding a real 4 stroke moto cross bike. been on many 125's, and 250's but took my first rip on an 2005 kawi kx250f. a friend of mine just got one (supposedly one of the first 05's available in Canada, he got it a few weeks back) and he's been working it in nice and easy. was out on sunday at the track and i told him i'm taking it for a rip. kinda weird cuz it has an accelerator pump (or something along those lines) and if u touch the throttle when the motor is off it will flood like crazy. i took it easy around the track for a bit then let it go. u could be in 2nd or 4th and the dang thing pulled the same!! i was impressed but had a hard time getting used to all the bottom end. i kept sitting there waiting for the two stroke power band to start kickin in. no such luck. lots of power on bottom end but i didnt like the top end at all. down the straights it felt like it needed more (compared to his old kx125). ive heard MANY bad things about those engines and i guess we'll have to wait and see how long it's gunna be before he spends big cash on it.
personally though, i would be on a 2 stroker before the 4 stroke. gotta love the difference in power delivery!! :inlove: 4 stroke for the trails, and 2 for the track IMO. what does everyone else think??
btw, i thought it sounded like a tractor.
The Hossman 08-25-2004, 11:22 PM Looks like the pros don't agree with you.....
Much to my surprise they almost all ride 4-strokes. I went to a race a few weeks back and was very surprised at how few 2 strokes were competing... I obviously don't follow moto-cross.... Makes you wonder what makes them better. :dazed:
My wife and I each have ktm 640 lc4 enduro and we love them.
Those thing pull the hell out of your arm from bottom to top. Maybe the top end is not so good because of the low cc's of the machine. Just shift out gears when the power get's flat so the bottom end torque will make you fly faster.
RacerX408 08-26-2004, 12:43 PM i know that most of the riders are using the thumpers but they have a lot more riding time on them, maybe that's all i need to change my mind.... it does pull extremely hard on bottom end for sure tho!!
rampage 08-26-2004, 01:59 PM Look at the 2004 Motocross standings.
RC is obviously dominating the 250 class on a 4 stroke. Now take a look at the 125 class. Bubba will not even have to fire up his two stroke again in order to win the 125 championship.
I still think that for the average rider who doesn't have a pit crew and sponsors, 2 strokes are more fun to ride than 4 strokes and they cost less (in time and money) to buy and maintain.
It will be great if Stewart rides a 2 stroke in the 250 class next year. If he rides as good as he does in the 125 class and RC rides a 4 stroke in the 250 class again, then we'll get the answer to this question proven on the track.
My prediction? RC will start of on the 450 four banger, but then after getting his butt kicked for half the season he will try to switch back to a 250 which will let him win a few races, but it will be too late and stewart will take the championship on a 2 banger. You heard it here 1st :)
I think it's the AMA and the factory teams that are pushing towards the 4 bangers, not the riders. The manufacturers have to worry about increasing EPA regs and they know that they'll never sell 4 stokes unless you can race them and win. I think that somehow eco-nazi members of the Sierra Club are now working under cover in high level positions withen the AMA...
SledHead 08-26-2004, 02:53 PM 4 stroke for the trails, and 2 for the track
Yup you have said it. In the woods the 2stroke is useless because you either have no power or to much but on straight streches you can fly on a 2.
4 strokes has good power but less then a 2 so in the woods you can get around go with out to much power!!

Not if you have a KTM 300. They call them '3 strokes' for a reason: All the screaming top end of a 2 stroke with low and mid-range grunt that comes close to a 4 stroke.
People who think that 2 strokes are all 'on or off power' either need a heavier flywheel or they suffer from LDS (Low Displacement Syndrome...)
Beyond that, 4 strokes have so much extra spinning mass (from the timing chain, gears and camshaft) that it makes 4 strokes feel more sluggish to come around when you're trying to weave your way through the tight, berm-bashing singletrack. Basically, all that extra spinning weight provides a gyro effect that makes the bike want to go in a straight line. One place where I think this 'gyro effect' is helpful is in the whoops where I think 4 strokes tend to track in a straight line up better than 2 strokes...
ny400ex 08-28-2004, 08:07 PM i think the new 4 stroke mx bikes are really good for the loose terrain mx tracks. they have the good tourque and hook up well while the 2 strokers spin, but when it comes down to a mixed hard and soft track, the 2 strokes have the powerband and such a strong hit that they are hard to beat. it seems that alot of the proffesional mx riders are switching over the the 4 strokes though
F7andZR800 08-29-2004, 07:17 PM The fact is, Four Strokes are better for the envoroment, thewy are cleaner, dont make smoke, make that sound. I like the Four Strokes jsut cause of that
RacerX408 08-29-2004, 09:27 PM why ride a 2 stroke sled then??
F7andZR800 08-29-2004, 10:03 PM 2 stroke sleds, uhh, well, you dont have to mix oil, but uhh, i dunno, I'm ok with Sleds lol
:blahblah: idiot comment.
