I'm revisiting a question I had a while ago.

I have 96 ZR 580 efisled w/ broken bulkhead (very broken- no I can't be fixed.)
The motor still ran very strong as it had a rebuild approx 1000 miles before I broke the sled in half.

My brother has a 1997 ZR 580 efi with a blown up motor.

I want to make one sled that runs out of both. Why can't I drop a 96 motor into a 97 sled? Is there a problem with the magneto since the 96 charges a battery and the 97 doesn't? (Remember 96 had a battery and 97 was battery-less) Can I just swap the magnetos? Time I have but money, I don't as I just bought a house in December but the thought of not riding AGAIN this season is killing me! I literally was up till 2:30am thinking about this last night. (Lots of coffee this morning.)

Any of you cat guys with any thoughts/experience??

And of course I actually have to get off my butt and sell this sled-full of parts taking up room in my garage. I still have EVERYTHING FOR SALE BUT THE SKIIS.

If interested, there are two 1996 580 ZR's in my garage for sale. Not mine, one is brother's and one buddy's. Buddy's has ETT, it may be a 97 though . We all got new this year.

You need to put all the efi gear from the 96 in the 97. or nuthing from the 96 other than the motor. ALL the Mag Coils etc. for the 97 must into the 96. I don't believe anything other than the raw engines will interchange.

I'm with Spaceman... take everything off the 96 mill and add all the 97 parts! The engine is the same... 580cc with triple ports, it's the electrics that are different!
You might want to stay with the 9 post clutch as well off the 97!
But I would take the 96 secondary! Change the outter plate to a roller and have fun!!

Sounds like I'd be better off selling the 96' motor and rebuilding the 97 motor. What should compression be in a 96 580? I know it's more important for them to be w/in 10% but How do I make sure it is acceptable? This motor was rebuilt about 1000-1500 miles ago and checked beginning of last season by dealer. I only got a couple rides out of the sled before I broke it last year. It SHOULD be in good shape as it pulled strong to the last :( but I want to make sure I'm selling someone a good motor.

Also, How much should this motor go for? Al's Snowmobile warehouse has a bunch of motors over a thousand bucks but they are newly rebuilt. I'd always rather leave a few bucks on the table and make sure someone gets a good deal but I don't want to GIVE it away either. I want a fair price.

Anyone? Even a starting point?? I'm sure the stator has to be worth a bunch in itself!
