Does anyone know if it's possible to copy Mapsource CD's for back up copies? My recent theft left me with no option but to repurchase the CD's. Just wondering if it's possible to create back ups to put away.

Yes I know, and yes, it's possible.

There is this maching called a disc clone or something like that. It will copy any cd. A friend has used it to copy many different things. Target used to sell it a year ago but they haven't stocked it since.

I use a program called Alcohol 120%. It will pretty much copy and copy protected CD/DVD. You can get a trial for it at Alcohol 120 (http://www.alcohol120.com/)

MapSource cd's ( at least US Roads & Rec, Canada Roads & Rec, US Topo) are not copy protected...you can make back-up copies. Have used my copys to do installs.

Your computers CD-ROM Writer should have software capable of making copies...no need to buy anything.

You need software that duplicates the CD bit for bit. Garmin does use a sort of copy protection, there is a disk error on the CD that MapSource looks for. Normal copy methods will not carry the error over to the new disk.

I have copied my City Select v5.02 cds and loaded it successfully from them, using the normal copying software that came on my pc. What would I have noticed if it was checking for this error?

The "copy protection" Garmin uses is in the unlock codes. It would do no good to send the CD copies to anyone because the unlock code works only for the serial number GPS that the unlock codes were generated for. I've never tried but I assume that Mapsource would run on the PC but you couldn't download to another GPS.
