: Winter Of 77 Redux?
spikegary 09-20-2004, 11:36 AM O.K., I know weather forecasting is a tricky business-more guessing game than anything, but the old heads (including some farmers around these parts) around here say that the summer of 77 was the same type weather we've had this summer-that preceded the winter of 77.
So, what do you think? Is this the year for REAL snow? Any ideas? Can't trust the local weather man. I believe Farmer's Alamanac says it's supposed to be a great winter for us. I trust the Farmers that live around here-they are pretty accurate.
We had frost in the Southern Tier this morning. Can't be too long now. May need to dress my daughter up in her sled gear for Halloween!
PETE/NY 09-20-2004, 02:23 PM :bash: Spike- I know what you mean about the weather forecasters! I have a snow plowing business here in Youngstown/Ransomville/Wilson area and I am kinda caught in the middle when they forecast! On one hand they say lots of snow coming -- Thats Bad as I have all contracts to plow the stuff and on the other hand I really want it to dump snow on us bigtime so I can ride!!! Then again, they really can't predict past 24 hours at times either so we will see how accurate all the farmers are.
DanB 360 09-20-2004, 06:52 PM I'm guessing it will be a bad winter here, well compared to other years. What i've heard on the weather channel though, is that it's going to be a bad winter for the rest of the states except montana, wyoming and colorado so who the heck knows.
puree 09-20-2004, 11:35 PM I was told that last year was the start of winter like we had back in the 70's,,,, didnt see much snow here at all,, had to go north to ride,,, this years farmers almanac calls for Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and lower Michigan to have a very wet and cold winter which means lots of snow,,, also said that out west they are still expecting cold, but not lots of snow and the east coast will be very dry,,,, so I love what it says,,,, but I am sure that dawg and phat cat would be screaming,,,,,
guess we will see soon enough.....
AzCats 09-20-2004, 11:51 PM Was that great winter 77-78 or 78-79 ? I bought a new 77 El Tigre spring of 78.
One of those winters people were riding horses across Lake Erie to Canada.
I lived in Western Pa. then, now in Arizona. We are supposed to get El Nino this year which means good snow here too.

permafrost 09-21-2004, 10:09 AM I want the winter of 96 back riding from nov11th to April 16th
I think that was one of the best years of my life. I purchased my first new sled that year a 1996 formula III 600 and put on over 11 000kms. This was before LadyK was into sledding. she called herself the skidoo widow as she had lost me to the sled, w00t . I only came back to Toronto that year for fresh clothing. I also think that this will be a good year for snow in this region. All the signs I am seeing are saying this :)
puree 09-21-2004, 10:17 AM I hope your all right,,,, I am tired of only being able to ride here @ my house only 7 or 8 times a year,,,,

mccracken 09-21-2004, 01:04 PM I remember that winter. I lived in Bloomingdale ontario and was 7yrs old. We built a out door rink and had trouble keeping the snow off it. Our family had a 340 tnt I believe. My dad took me everywhere on that thing. The roads were always covered. If we have a winter like that again the snowmobile world will be a very happy place. The only thing we can do now is pray to the snow gods. Fingers are crossed!! :sarcasm:

It snowed 6" on the last day of the gun hunt for deer. The sledding was great that year. I think that was the best season to that point in my sledding. Did the RAP tour in -35* to -40* temps w/ the flu

doo700 09-21-2004, 10:19 PM [attachmentid=15206]This was the winter of 78 or 79 (don't remeber for sure) in southern ontario.
The Hossman 09-22-2004, 12:12 AM Oh yeah, I remember the winter 96.... I bought my '92 Mach 1 that year. Awesome sled (well, in those days... :D ) and awesome season! I took my last ride on MAY 1st!!!! There was a freak over-night snowfall of about 12", how could I resist?
The next good year that I remember was 2000/2001 - I bought my 2000 MXZ500 that year and logged over 10,000 kms.... :inlove: Keep your fingers crossed boys - this year's gonna be a good one!
LadyK 09-22-2004, 07:38 AM I have no faith in weather liars. :) The almanac was bang on with first frost for my area. When the weather liar says a storm is coming I load up the radar maps and read them for myself and have found I got better results then the weather liars :)
spikegary 09-22-2004, 11:15 AM As I've said before, I'd love to have a gig where I can be wrong all the time and still get paid.........wait a minute, I'm married.....never mind! :D

Why is it that the weather liars who are always wrong still have a job. If this was any other job you would be fired. I don't understand!!!!!! :bash: :withstupid:

:( C'Mon guys- we all know that the more $$ you make, the less you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Same thing holds true to the weatherguy except when hes wrong, he blames it on the million dollar doppler radar thingamajig they just installed! Well hopefully for all of us here he is right this season and the Weather Gods bring us lots of white stuff-then I can play and work in it all at the same time, though probably not in that same order.lol.
Scott S 09-22-2004, 03:22 PM 77 was a great season, just got the old Scorpion Whip 340 in time for the snow to start. I rode all over that winter except for a week when school was closed due to severe weather and there was literally too much on the ground to ride. I sat in the house hoping it would stop. Haven't wished for that since.
The sled just sank like a brick and couldn't get out of the yard. Even the roads were unpassable.
I'd be happy with the snow we've had the last few years. Good riding has been had from December 30th up until mid March within striking distance with the trailer. Trailering has become a way of life for us chasing snow within a days drive there an back.
It would be great to have the entire sled belt have a banner year. It would be good for those who have had a few lean winters as well as the industry in general.
I know every second of the day from Dec 1st I look outside my office window and start hoping that everytime I see a flake flutter down it is the start of something big.
I don't pay any attention to the weather people any more. Time and again they predict snow storms with 30-50 cm's and we get 1-5 cm's. I think it is all hype to get the ratings up and nothing at all to do with the weather.
Here's hoping!!!!!
