: Ducks.
highlandergerman 05-24-2002, 02:24 AM My wife was on the way home today when she came across some baby ducks on the road, *there mother had just been hit by a car, *she and another person got them loaded into a box, *she bought the heat lamp, the (speacial) duck food. *ect. *the inlaws have raised chicken ect so we have some idea. *However any good ideas would be welcome. * Also are they always so active, and loud.
zrgreen 05-24-2002, 08:48 AM I would call your local DNR office for the advice.I know in NY we have wildlife rehabilitators that you can call, licensed by the state to care for injured/orphaned animals.
Wolfman 05-24-2002, 09:33 PM As far as feeding is concerned, you just need to make sure that there is plenty of feed available. *They'll eat their fill on their own, unless they were still bound to the nest (assuming they weren't here). *There is another thing. *You'll need to make sure that they are continually exposed to water, and are allowed to swim. *Untill they get real feathers, they need to be out of the water within 15 mins, or they'll sink and drown. *If they are not introduced and made used to water, then you'll have a bunch of ducks like the two eatin' ducks that I have. *Put these two in water where they cannot touch the ground and they freak! * http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
I would definetly call the conervastion warden and ask for advise or some type of shelter that is availabe.
Otherwise a dog house for shelter and plenty of food and water.
Rocketman 05-25-2002, 03:50 AM personally, I would raise them like swimming chickens...put them in an enclosure protected from predators (hawks/owls/weasels/fox//etc etc). Offer them water to swim in, an old kids pool or big basin or something. ANd when they get big enough, just let them roam...they won't go far once they learn where the food is. you could even clip their flight feathers if you don't want them to fly away. Many farms have resident ducks.
They are probably noisy because the parent they were imprinted on is no longer there. They will call until mom comes back, or till they adopt a new parent of some sort.
Team_Arctic 05-25-2002, 04:21 AM i would *call the dnr and raise them like swimming chickens http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif they will stop making so much noise in about a week we had 4 kittens come in to out house after the mom got hit on the road loud as could be but then they calmed down...
Team_Arctic 05-25-2002, 04:23 AM almost forgot... if you had a chicken farm or a duck farm or something near by take it to them and see if they will take them *or you could take them to the zoo maybe like a childrens zoo and let them loose there theres lots of ducks there
highlandergerman 05-27-2002, 04:00 PM they have calmed down, *we put them in the tub for about ten minutes then put them back into the cleaned huge box with the heat lamp, *we give them all the food and drink they can handle( *they eat alot, ansd drink alot) *The inlaws raise chickens, ect so i think we have a pretty good handle on it.
highlandergerman 06-19-2002, 03:49 AM a picture of the ducks. *This was right before we built them a cage and put them out side, *they are getting there feathers, * i think that they are malards(sp) *it is too late in the day, * they are getting along fine and we shall be releasing them into our horse shoe(oxbow lake of the river) soon.
FishHog 06-19-2002, 11:31 AM if your wife is anything like mine, I would get rid of them ASAP, before you have 6 full time new pet ducks.
I've never been able to get my wife to eat anything we have raised. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
