: 50 Kmh On The Trails In Ontario?
zr580cat 10-06-2004, 08:52 PM I was just on the NOSSA website and under trail regulations, it says "Speed limits are 20Kmh in town and 50Kmh out on the trails"
According to www.onlineconversion.com, 50Kmh is equivilent to about 31 mph.
Is that correct? Are they really strict at patrolling? Has anyone on this site been ticketed for riding over 50Kmh?
paul yarek 10-06-2004, 08:58 PM sure is correct and we all abide by it too.
doo rider 10-06-2004, 09:02 PM Have not been ticketed myself, but I have seen people get stopped by radar before on the trail
paul yarek 10-06-2004, 09:05 PM i guess when they do stop you for speeding it is a set fine and only the lead sledder gets the fine. that is from Permafrost, i think he took the bullet once.

Paul, if you accidentally touch your throttle, you're speeding already! So where does everyone get to use their 100mph (161 Kmh) sleds?
The Hossman 10-06-2004, 09:34 PM I've personally never had any trouble with the law up here. As long as you're not dangerous (Racer-wannabe..), the police or the wardens don't bother with you too much. I've only actually seen them running radar a few times on a trail - and that's usually on a weekend afternoon when you really can't get going too quick anyways because of traffic and trail conditions....
So, to answer your question - YES the limit is 50km/h. And NO, nobody obeys it. Except Paul. Just hope that you don't get stuck behind him, both because of his pokey driving, and flatulence.... :p

i learned that from your mom, .
TrailorParkBoy 10-06-2004, 09:40 PM If you come to Ontario and do 50 kph on the trail, you will get run over by everyone including women and kids. Nobody drives 50kph unless they ride a 72 Elan.
1arctic_dan 10-06-2004, 09:44 PM Correct, i usually ride at 100 k on our trails, use your comon sence and you will not get stopped, i never got stopped for speeding,

Ah yes, when I rode with Paul we never went over the speed limit :undercover:
kowalcs 10-07-2004, 06:49 AM We had a group of nine of us take a trip to Canada last year. Of course we didn't obey the 50km/h speed limit. We'd still be trying to get to our destination if that was the case. Our pact was that if the lead guy got a ticket, we would all split the cost. I think that's a good philosophy to have.
DOO THE DOO 10-07-2004, 07:34 AM Yes thats true 50k but Ive never been botherd although my old Safari don't go much more then 110K in perfect condtions so I ride about 70-80 it cruises nice there...but there are alot of racer wannabe's who kill people every day so can't blame the Cops for trying to stop that and I could be wrong but on the lakes you can go as fast as you like right?
panthro 10-07-2004, 08:15 AM In highly populated areas, I've seen people ticketed for blasting across a lake. Why? Because they were on a TRAIL that happened to cross a LAKE. If you come across a lake crossing on a trail, they can still nab you for doing over 50k.
Be careful.

Paul, my mom doesnt like a law abiden citizen, she likes the rebel type :p
msperic 10-07-2004, 09:27 AM If you do happen to ge a speeding ticket on a snowmobile does it go against you drivers license? If it does then it will have effects on your rate of insurance come renewal time for both car & snowmobile?. As well is it always a set fine? or does the cost increase based on the speed you were riding at.
beaver 10-07-2004, 10:04 AM NO IT DOES NOT GO AGAINST YOU LICENSE.

No it does not go against your lincese it will be paided the township the ticket happens in.
Leader of the pack always gets it,everyone else needs to have everthing in order or they will get one to(pink slip, permit, owership)
Trust me i have paided a few of those,Parry Sound/Huntsville is the worse

WTF :bash:
Do you really believe there is someone killed everyday on OFSC trails? :dazed:  :sarcasm:
The majority of the deaths are on lakes/roads collisions or drowning :sly: and only 10% or less happen on trails I believe we had less then 25 deaths last season the vast majority had nothing to do with OFSC trails :sly:
The reason we have the speed limit is because back in 70s/80s it was crazy to ride faster then that because a-the sleds were mostly leafs sprung with 3"travel max and the trails were nowhere near as smooth as today with grooming
It is funny how people perceive us even people who are in the sport itself
BTW the only time I was stop by radar on trails was back in 89 on my 87 Safari 377 doing 103kmph(wide open) by a Sudbury Regional I was 15 at the time and he let me go with a warning though he scared me by saying he was going to contact my father :dazed:
should i wear my gold chains ?

Chubby 10-11-2004, 05:52 PM Wow This post got hijacked in a bad way.
Bauer 10-11-2004, 10:16 PM I say Bah to the speed limits. Just ride carefully, WOT on good spots, tap it cool in the bad ones. Use your discretion.
As for getting stopped, the closest i have ever been to getting stopped on my sled here was when i was at the gas station and the cops came to get fuel. The just asked about my Home Made risers, and that was about it. They never took a good look at the plates to see a trail pass or a registration expirey date.
About the going against the liscense thing, in manitoba it does go against your drivers liscense, and the fine is not set, the higher the speed, the higher the cost. So check into it if you are planning on riding out of province.

Beware in the Muskoka Region on weekends. Especially when riding into Bracebridge from the south. I've seen the lazer-radar wielding OPP with STOP wardens sitting at a junction just south of Hwy 118 several times.
Common sence would serve you well when around towns, especially on weekends.

TrailorParkBoy 10-12-2004, 09:13 PM Never been fined and dont want to know what it costs.
But the general sentiment of most of the replys which are on the topic spell it out. Dont speed in and or around a town. You never know who's watchin'.
Is it ok for all of us to pick on Paul or is it just for select members?

In Ontario, the fine is $109 under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act.
Because you're fined under this act, there are no demerit points on your driver's license.
