: Purchase of a truck question
Do the Doo 05-30-2002, 12:37 PM I was compareing prices last week in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada on the Chevy 2500HD W/Duramax diesel. My question to anyone out there, have you ever bought a new truck in Canada but you live in the US? I was told the truck has to be registered in Canada for 6 months by a Canadian resident. Then later they can transfer the title over.
* Can someone shed alittle more light on this, especially when it comes to registering in the US (taxes, fees and so on).
* *I was going to try to make the truck look used on paper and that I already own it and relocating it to the US.
* *At the moment, the truck is $12-13K cheaper *in Canada. (US dollars cheaper)

revrnd 05-30-2002, 02:40 PM Be wary of this. Chrysler announced last week that it would not honour the warranty on Cdn. sold vehicles bought by US citizens. No word if GM is planning the same.
Do the Doo 05-30-2002, 05:45 PM Thanks, in-laws are Canadian, so title can transfer to wife's name, thus it keeps the vehicle in the family name per say...
paul yarek 05-30-2002, 05:49 PM Do the Doo,
*you can buy a truck brand new here in canada and drive it straight across to USA but like revrnd says the auto manufacturers are going to void all warranties soon. he says chrysler has and i know honda and toyota have, ford is talking about it and i am sure GM is never far behind. as for the 6 month rule it is only to beat a system that the dealers must abide by to control exports and if the truck you are planning on purchasing here is proved to be purchased with intention for use in the USA then i don't know what the outcome will be. *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
Paul, can you find out more about this? I'm sure you get some used Chevys in from time to time. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif I'll drive over and buy one from you.
paul yarek 05-30-2002, 11:34 PM we get them all the time. the thing that a USer has to do is check with his customs and import people to see what has to be done on his end.
Do the Doo 05-31-2002, 05:56 PM Paul, If the dealer knows you are from the states, you have to do one of two things (correct me if I am wrong) You have to sign some document saying the truck will remain in Canada, and I think there was a fee with this as well, or the dealer can outrightly say "No" to selling you a truck. The salesman spoke with me outside the dealership informing me of some of the issues to US people buying new in Canada. His boss would say No to me if the boss new I was from the US.
Salesman also mention some people in Canada are making it a business to buy the trucks for a US customer and then doing a title transfer after the time period. They charge the US customer something like $5K Canadian for their services.
highlandergerman 06-01-2002, 01:58 AM A guy i went to school with just picked up a 02 chevy with 5000 miles on it. *He had to pay the gst, and pst , he then drove across the border and to home, *he had to register, and pay the taxes on it, * three monthes later he got his gst, andpst back. *This is what i have been told, *it is odd to ride in and see his dash though(all metric). *he could have a new dash put in for about 800. *but he thinks he shall just leave it alone.
Do the Doo 06-03-2002, 08:30 PM Not really worried about the dash. Just did a MSRP comparison yesterday. 2500HD LT Crew Cab, 4Dr, 6.0L Duramax w/6 speed comes out to $43K, In Canada by my in-laws, 54K with Allison tranny, save $1200 if I order the truck with a stick.
revrnd, your friend payed the tax here at registration because the truck was not registered up in Canada for a while...my guess. I would register it in Canada for w while then re-register it here in the states. Thus avoiding the tax here in the US. (STill have to get to registar and talk to them. My wife maintains Canadian citizenship, only has residency here. My son has split residency.
revrnd 07-22-2002, 09:37 PM In the National Post (Canada) last week GM announced that any dealers caught selling vehicles that ended up in the US would face reduced vehicle allocations & the possibility of not getting limited quantity vehicles.
performancex 07-23-2002, 01:41 PM That sounds like the type of threat that would end up in court if they followed through with it.
