My neighbours are researching what is going to be necessary to set up a network between our two houses, which are 600 feet apart, so that we can share their sattelite internet service and split the cost. As part of this, we set up a network in their home in preparation for the eventual link between the houses (still researching best xmit median).

When we went down to the metromess to pick up parts, I came across a 100 gig hard drive on sale for $139. In dire need of more storage, I jumped on the sale. Much later that night, after getting back from getting their network up and running, I proceeded to install the hard drive in my home PC - which is not a newer machine by any means. I had the expected problem with the bios, and followed their directions to install and use their overlay software to make it all work. The PC immediately rendered itself unuseable. I tried removing the new drive and reinstalling the old ones. Still no luck. Called it a night and called Western Digital the following morning. We were on the phone for over 45 minutes trying to bring the PC back up. Best that could be done was to get it to the login screen, which after typing the password, would just loop back to the login, despite accepting the pw as valid. *

Needing to get other things done, I let it go untill I got back home from running errands. When I got home, I went to the neighbours and picked up the Win2k CD that we were using to set up the server and network the night before. On the way back home, I decided that it was high time to install the PIII 650 processor and motherboard that I had bought from a friend a couple of months ago. It needed a controller card, which the neighbour had and gave to me, as the on board controller was shot.

I disassembled the old P 266 system and installed the "new" board and processor. One immediate small problem. I needed to buy a new modem, as I had three old ISA boards, and only one ISA slot in the "new" machine. Not wanting to drive back to the metromess, I elected to pay the high prices of our local PC shop. $60 later, I had a new USR modem.

Time came for me to fire up the new system. No dice. The add on IDE controller would not work with the motherboard. We made several attempts to get it running, up to an including using a different controller card. Still no go. Now good and mad, I've decided that I've had enough, and elected to go buy a new board to eliminate the known problems of the current one. *

I get down to the place where I originally bought the hard drive the previous day. On the way down, I decide that the old chassis is too beat up and missing too much stuff to continue to be used.

I get there and select this awesome server style box with tons of additional cooling capacity, well built, lots 'o space for only $139. Time for a motherboard. There are NO slot 1 boards left, and apparently they aren't going to sell any more. Now I'm in immediate need of both a new processor AND a new motherboard. *

Well, now I've decided that I need to just get the damned upgrade done and over with.

Now, in place of a 266mhz Pentium pc, I now have a 1.5 ghz, P IV machine complete with a new CD ROM burner, 256 meg of ram, "new" AGP video card (bought used), 10 gig main, and 100 gig secondary drives (the drives came up perfectly in this thing), new SCSI card, and a new modem (56K), for the total of $600.

I moved my old CDrom drive (54X), floppy drive, network card, SCSI zip disk, as well as reused the current 17' monitor, and the printer that I had only bought a couple of weeks earler.

What started out as a measly $140 hard drive, resulted in a grand total of $800 into a new PC. Oh well, I needed to replace it anyway. *

I HATE workiing on computers.

Reading all that makes me not want to use my computer ever again * http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *, well maybe just for games *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sarcasm.gif *You did build a very good PC for 800$ though.

Sounds like a really good price for what you did. *Bet thats quite a change from a 266 to a 1.5. *Have you looked into wireless access points. * I have seen 2.5ghz setups selling for not to bad. *I'm in the process of building a 1.7 AMD with tv in and out and 5.1 digital sound it has a 30gig harddrive and 384 or ram. *Can't believe how much cheaper they are to build then buy.

Well..... if you have any questions about computers or networking im sure i could help you i have been kinda a computer nerd for my whole like and know what im doing pretty good.. for your network *600feet uhh i would look up a wan ( wide area Network) or if you felt special you could run a lan( local area network) and would prly be cheaper *but you are goin to have to big a whole *well a trench to put it in the ground *i would put it in pvc pipe and if you had a way keep it from gettin too cold *it could cause problems and keep water off of it * *i put on in to all of the rooms in my house about 700 feet of cable that you can get almost anywhere *HD , Bestbuy almost anyplace * and you are also goin to need a HUB * you hook all of the cables in to it and it acts as a like a switch board and sends stuff to all of the other computers .... if you are only goin to be hookin up 2 computers *i would run a crossover cable *its more expensive and i dont think they make 600feet *but you can look if you have any questions about comps or anything else let me know i have msn messenger and aim * let me know how it goes

Wolf, I would go wireless, make sure you get the best price, I saw a wireless router hub for $99 in the Best Buy circular the other day. *Make sure you buy a compatable Wireless reciever and transmitter!

To all of you others who make their own computers, I envy you, I wish I had the time to do that. *I have a 1.6 ghz P4 now, 512 mb of DDR, 19 inch flat screen, 80 gb 7200 rpm, ati all-in-wonder video card with 64 mb and S-Video output and Cable input along with rca output, USB remote, DVD-rom, DVD burner, and for $1599. *I looked at making this computer before I bought it, and I could have got it all for $1500, but no warranty that comes with a mass-produced Computer

Here is the email a guy from Shelby Twp. sent me yesterday. He had another system like this on ebay that didn't sell. I ended up getting a nice system for less but I'm going to get a system from him in the future most likely. I also picked up aa 21" Sun Microsystem Sony Flat screen monitor for $225 on ebay. *I checked the prices in Computor Shopper for most of these parts and they go for over a grand. *Hope this helps you guys in getting a new machine.

I'm looking at a pc by my place tonight but I doubt I'll want it as yours sounds alot nicer for a little bit more money. I am concerned about the XP not including discs. I know microsoft requires the code keys now. Is all the hardware new? Is it ready for me to just plug in a set of Altec Lansing 5.1 sound system? And last since you build them does it come with any type of support and or warrenty? Thanks, Caleb

Steve, ya should have bought the goods if you took the time to look for the parts. *These things go together VERY quickly once you get the goods home. *Everything that I bought new have warranties on the parts. *The only warranty you don't get is for the assembly, which of course, you did yourself. *The biggest satisfaction of building a new machine is a combination of being able to hand pick what you install, and knowing that you will be able to add more stuff down the line without freaking out some proprietary junk that is almost always installed in the package jobs. *To me, the scalability of a well planned, self assembled system is worth more than the prices of the package jobs.

Dogg, do you know of any other 21" flat panels for that price?! *I would get one in a heart beat at that price if it is new and not beat up. *Do you like the one you got?

Steve, * i dont think that the wireless cards will work from house to house.. *what was it 6oofeet thats a bit far for a wire less i think *they are mostly ment for *same house use i think they transmit 350 feet tops *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Phazerhater what do you think of that XP2100 cpu. *Thats what I planned my system for. *I'm just running a cheap 900 Duron cpu until I sell my labtop. *I would think that the wireless would be good for 600ft easy. *I used to work at an electronics store and we had 2.5 gighertz digital cordless phones and we could go to the other end of the mall about 250 yards no problem and there is alot of interference in a mall. *The wireless that I have looked at are based of the same 2.5 gighertz digital signal.

zr500, IMO the XP2100+ is bar none the best CPU out there right now. *Intel has there so called 2.2g and higher cpu's that perform close to the AMD, but faster isn't always better, at least in this case. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif * The AMD is well worth it and you can pick them up on ebay brand new w/ 3 yr. warranty for a little over $200 US +shp.
I heard something about AMD coming out with something even better than their XP line soon also. *I think it is going to be an AMD MP....?

Thanks for the info PH. *I can't wait to sell my other computer so I can get the bigger cpu. *I think I have seen some ads out already for that MP cpu.
