Just fired up the sled, runs great...smells great. After the smoke cleared, I was on a mission to locate an accessory plug to hook up my stock Arctic Cat electric helmet shield. My sled is a 2001 ZR600 EFI. I've been told to use the extra plug under the hood near the tach/speedo gauges, however my meter doesn't show 12 volts when sled is running. Any suggestion on where I can find a power source? Thanks. Mark
Time to store the cycle...pull out the sled.

How many volts is it showing? If it's low, perhaps get on the throttle a bit and see if it the voltage jumps up.

Make sure your meter is reading AC, not DC. The plug you are looking for will show anywhere from 10 to 16 volts AC depending on the RPM of the motor.
And yes, your shield does not know the difference between AC or DC, it will work fine with either.... :)

Don't use the one under the hood. I think it is only 6 volts or something. Atleast that is what a dealer said one time. Tear into the steering column. Should be a plug in there. Use that one.

I think the dealer was pulling someone's leg here.
Anyway, back to the question at hand.
Find a spare plug (either buried in the handlebar or under the hood) that is driven by a yellow wire and a brown wire. The brown wire is chassis ground, the yellow wire is approximately 13 volts AC with an engine RPM of about 3000 or above. All yellow wires on your sled's harness are 13 Vac at the given RPM (and all brown wires are chassis ground). Polarity makes no difference to your face shield.
Good luck, a spare plug is usually pretty easy to find with a little digging around.

I saw the DMM. 6 volts
Don't know why.

rfmckee, you said the DMM shows 6 volts. The shield requires 12 volts. Where should I hook in?

I tapped off the yellow and brown wires that lead to the hand and thumb warmers. When I was installing, the DMM, did not show voltage until I got on the throttle a bit, like someone mentioned above. I haven't have any problems!

All yellow wires anywhere on the sled give 12v +/- 2v depending on RPM. Brown wires are ground. There is an open plug by behind the guages and also in the steering column. The one in the steering is the best to access for the shield. IMO
