: The Best Helmet?
ndmeathead 10-24-2004, 12:36 AM hi,
I'm new to this site but love the sport. I live in ND and was able to experience mountain riding last year for the first time in Wy. It was one of the funnest things I've ever did and it well defiantly be a yearly thing. For those who haven't done it i highly recommend that you try it.
The problem i had their however was that the shield on my closed face helmet wouldn't quit fogging. I'm planning on purchasing a new one but am wondering the best way to go? I was considering either a helmet equipped with an electric shield or a motocross helmet with goggles.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I was also wondering if anyone knows where i can get some really hairy sledding pictures for my desktop? THANKS
puree 10-24-2004, 12:47 AM welcome to the sport and the best site on the net!!!
I too once had a problem with fogging and let me tell you, the results really stink!!! I went out and got me a ski doo modular helmet and have had no issues with it. I have a heated shield, and still wear the breath deflector,,,, but I have NO fogging problems with it at all,,,,
Spaceman 10-24-2004, 08:31 AM I'm just a flatlander so I really don't know but ,most trail riders wear fullfaces and the majority of Mountain riders seem to go Moto-X. The off trail type riding is a huge athletic workout so I would vote MX because once you get a fullface all sweaty even an electric shield has a hard time.Just my observation. Welcome to the site!!
konkinj 10-24-2004, 02:55 PM Mountain riding = full face MotoX with goggles
Flatland riding (especially in ND) = full face with electric visor
....... on a side note, you will find yourself the victim of many jokes if you wear a modular in the mountains
FZ700 10-24-2004, 08:57 PM I wear the moto stlye with goggles myself. I also have 3 goggles with different shades (clear, blue, yellow). In the early morning and in the when the sun starts to go down you do not want to be wearing tinted goggles, its hard to read the terrain.
Also, don't skimp on the helmet. Be sure to buy a helmet that's comfortable and light weight.
DamageInc 10-24-2004, 09:09 PM I'm with the others: Motocross style w/goggles for mountain, full face w/electric for trails.
Bauer 10-24-2004, 10:10 PM I wear a Full Face Moto and Goggles. I like it alot. Even if the goggles do fog a bit you drive 50 feet and they are clear. Get a good balaclava, and you will be fine. The only time i had problems with being cold was on a -41C day. Was fine other wise.

lcwarner 10-25-2004, 03:54 PM Don't mean to hijack this thread. :undercover: I'm new to this sport and trying to piece together the proper equipment for my 10 year old son. He will probably be riding a ZR120. A snowmobile dealer recommended a FLY helmet with goggles. The helmet seems a bit heavy to me but I have nothing to compare it with. Any opinions on this product? Thanks
SLeD_nEcK 10-25-2004, 05:21 PM Well I ride both on and off trail and I wear a moto-x helmet with custom vents in it. I gets a little cold something, but I love it and I'd wouldn't wear anything else. I don't wear a balaclava, but I have a custom mouth peace attached to my helmet. On the mouth peace, I got a neck-warmer that attaches to it so I get no cold air that goes down my neck. I wear dragon goggles and they NEVER fog up unless the vents are blocked with snow. So all in all, I recommend the motocross style helmet with a good pair of goggles with either a balaclava or neck warmer.

DeeMan 10-25-2004, 06:04 PM I think you'll find helmet preference is like beer - everyone has thier own preference and taste. And, what works well for some, does not work for others.
I experiment with 4-5 different helmets last year and decided on the MX with Goggles. The others always seemed to fog at the worse times, and fogging can really, really kill the fun of a trip. I got really tired twisting my chin up and to the side to see out of the little circle on my lense that was not fogged.
I don't think I have heard any compalints from people who try the MX setup but like I said - everyone has thier own preference.
DanB 360 10-25-2004, 06:41 PM I wear a full face helmet and ride mountains. It's more personal preference. Depends what you like to do also.
ballsout1 10-25-2004, 06:58 PM i own a electric sheild helmet and a mx helmet and goggles.......all last year i used the mx.
team old iron 10-25-2004, 07:09 PM For me Warm days moto style. Cold ones I wear a full face HJC
black04f6 10-25-2004, 08:23 PM No matter what ridding I do I always wear a MX with goggles. I have NEVER fogged up. I also race and that is why I stick with that style. I wear HJC.
MI-Skidoo 10-25-2004, 08:35 PM I was new last year and bought a Ski-Doo Modular Helmet. It works well but Im not impressed with the snaps that hold the face mask to the helmet. Mine were very tight and the plastic that it's attached to is junk. The plastic part acts like a hinge, but when cold breaks easily. I broke mine the second day of riding last year. Guess I wasn't the only one with the problem, by Feb. the snaps were not available from any dealer locally and were backordered indefinately.
I ended up using nylon filiment tape to hold them together and it lasted the rest of the season. This year Im gonna by a few and keep them in the sled before I head out.

When my son was 6 I bought him an inexpensive fullface helmet with double lens shield. It had a breath deflector in it and worked ok but I spent alot of time stopping to wipe the fog off the shield. The next year I bought him a decent helmet with an electric visor. Best thing I ever did. No more fogging.
As a side note, why would you put a ten year old on a sled meant for 6 year olds. Its gonna entertain him for 10 minutes. Get him an older Yamaha Bravo or Enticer from the 80's. They are way cheaper ($500-$1000 here) and it will entertain him for a couple of years maybe. Thats my 11 year old in the avatar. He was ten in the pic and been riding the Z440 for the last two years. He rode a Bravo 250 for 3 years before that.

:withstupid: I do the same thing, keep a couple with me "just-in-case", I did find a Mod 2 :undercover: not too expensive and now have one for this winter and I like the looks of it so far, I think it will be more durable than the original modular, but not as easy to deal with my glasses.
If I could find some goggles to fit over my glasses that might be the ticket with a MX helmet :sly:
