I'm looking for a decent tent. Anyone know what to look for?/not to look for?

How many people are going to be sleeping in it? I just bought a 8' X 8' dome tent @ Wal-Mart, 80 bucks + tax. I only use it a couple of times, so no big reason to get a expensive one.

I have found that you should go bigger than you need to get more room.

yeah...I was looking for a 4-6 man tent..that way you can sleep at least 3 guys with lots of room.

My formula: 4 man tent = 3 normal sized Canadians http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif can sleep in it
* * * * * * * * 5 man = 4 people
* * * * * * * * 6 man = 5 people etc etc

What kinds of materials etc have people had problems with? What will keep the rain out the best? I am not familiar with all the different grades of nylon, was hoping there was someone on here that could shed some light on it. This tent has to last a while.

rocketman,
*get one of those that have the poles that breakdown. we go on an anual 3 day canoe trip and the tent only takes 10 minutes to put up.

eureka! makes a great tent. *if you use your tent alot then don't cheapout. *stiching and zippers are potential trouble
and keeping dry is important too.

Been camping for a couple yrs now and sometimes for more then a month at a time. I have a 10'X12'X 6'high Spalding canadian tire tent which sleeps 3 very confortable and that we sometimes put a foldable picnic table in and cook inside, It's 60 % screen so lots of ventilation when tarp is off + no mosquitos. Was 150$ and got it 100$ on sale. I also have a 6 X 8 which barely fits 3 but that's for people that fit in mummie bags. The dome tents with square floor has the most space for your $ IMO. If you plan on doing occasional camping don't go with expensive stuff, what would damage a cheap nylon tent will most lickely damage the expensive ones as well. As for the waterproofing, mine just started leaking after 6 yrs but we usualy put a blue tarp on it when there is a storm, it's still waterproof when light to normal rainfall.

Hi Rock,
Canadian Tire has Coleman products. They are pretty good. I was checking them out before I left your neighborhood. Are there 2 near you? Go to a supersize store for selection. What to look for are sealed seams, waterproof bottom, a good size rainfly (covers the tent), and most of all since you and I are close to the same height, get one that is 6'4"+ in height. I am a firm believer bigger is better. My tent is 14' by 16' and 6'5" in the center. On crappy days I have all my gear, baby portable crib, *queen size air mattress with room to have a chair or 2 to sit in side *wait out the weather. I go overboard a little with a tarp --15' X 30 '. It covers my tent, picnic table and space to drive the car under. It's funny to see, but we have a lot of pine trees in the camping areas that drop some serious size sap droppings.
Get the weight of your boat yet for me?? Try to give you *a prop size.

E-mail me,
