hey got a ? about a john deere snowmobile its a 400 don't know what year though i'm try to get it running but can't get any spark out of it. does anyone know how to get spark

Not sure if it has them, but look at the points. Probably need to be adjusted or get new ones put in.

I looked at the points and sandes them down and tryies it again but still no spark.

Unplug the wiring harness from the motor to make sure that it isn't a kill switch or key switch problem. If its not that and you've sanded the points, you might need to replace the points, condensors, internal coils, and then external coils.

ok i'll do that and another ? do you have to have a battery to make it have spark or and can you run the engine with out having the wiring harness hooked up to it

No, it doesen't need the battery. That is for electric start only. Yes the motor can run with the wiring harness unhooked.

ok I've done every thing you told me and now I only got a little bit of spark I have to touch the middle of the spark plug to make it spark and its really faint what else should I do

Those J.D.'s were my first sleds they were great, I abused them on a yearly basis for 8 years did virtually no maint. and they ran and ran.
Just cant remember enough to help though sorry.

You should be able to get points and condensors at your local snowmobile parts store. If not, let me know, I can get some for you.
