Just picked up a 1994 STX 583 Rave with 14,000 klicks and the orignal owner says the clutches have never been rebuilt, never had to be he says.
Should i rebuild them? Will i regain any performance that has been lost, if any? How hard is it to do and what all should be replaced?
Do i have to remove the engine from the sled? Thanks.

Clutches are basic snowmobile maintentence. With 14000 klicks i'd say they for sure need to be taken apart. A lot of people take them apart every season to clean and replace parts... You should take them apart and at least inspect them, to see if anything is worn. You'll need some special tools, most of which you can make...A good clutch puller is a must! probably about 50 bucks from skidoo, cheaper from a place like royal. And you'll need the button retainer forks too, which are fairly cheap. The rest you can make from various objects from a hardware store and some household items...
Rad Chad has some excellent tutorials on skidoo clutches in the high performance tuner section

1st get a TRA puller from Royal Distributing :sly:
NO you do NOT have to take the engine out :D
It would be worth taking the primary and secondary apart to clean and see for wear and tear
The secondary most likely needs the plastic cams replaced(Under $2)
The primary might need the buttons replaced,I went with Doos teflon ones :undercover: s
Might look at replacing the clutch springs, note you don't really have too,I have not replaced mine yet, still debating
Also take the chaincase cover off(4 10mm bolts) and see what gears you have and change the gear oil
Check the brake pads for wear
AKA normal stuff you do to all your sleds before season start :sly:

You don't really need the button retainer forks if you have a 2nd person helping ya work on the clutch
