: Primary Spring

This may seem like a dumb question to some. I have now taken apart, cleaned, etc. two primary TRA clutches acording to RadChad's cheat sheets. I guess my question would be, what the heck does the primary spring do? I was putting my clutch bacvk together on my 02 600, and I looked at it and could not figure it out! It is held firmly in place by 3 bolts in the housing! So really, there is no place for it to go. It cannot expand, as far as I can tell. So what is the function? Maybe I am just having an off day, this stuff usually comes pretty easy to me. If someone could explain this to me, it would be greatly appreciated! I guess I just do not like to take something apart without knowing how it works. As far as I can tell, the ramps and arms are the only thing that controls the shift of the clutch. Someone show me the light!!

My brain fart just let go! I think I have it, but someone confirm this for me. Does the spring apply pressure to the shaft (or the shaft applies pressure to the spring)? So as the clutch engages, the spring applies more pressure? I have already put it back on, so I cannot check for sure.

:withstupid: :withstupid: :withstupid:

Three times for good measure!

The primary function of the "primary spring" is to control the engagement speed of the clutch. You want a higher engagment, higher RPM, a stiffer spring, a lower engagment, lower RPM, a softer spring.

You can surf around and find all kinds of other functions of this thing but in a nut shell this is what it does.

Hope it helps.
