: A colder snowier winter ahead?
YellowBelly 06-24-2002, 02:29 PM I was thinking, with all these wildfires going on and creating so much smoke, maybe it will cool off the planet and we''ll have a colder snowier winter this year!?!?
Just wishful thinking.
I need snow! It''s too hot outside!

performancex 06-24-2002, 03:40 PM I thought it was snowing but it was just ashes falling from the sky.
dooman 06-24-2002, 06:48 PM I bet all the extremist greenies are wishing there was some clearing in those big forests that are burning then maybe it would not be as bad.
Wolfman 06-24-2002, 07:40 PM Nah, they'll just blame it all on global warming, just like every thing else. *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sarcasm.gif
zrgreen 06-24-2002, 09:30 PM I don't think it can get any worse than it did last year. We had about 1/2 the snow of a usual winter..50" or so..all no more than 2" at a time, then it would warm up and melt. At least I can always drive to Tug Hill where they always get snow, here it depends on which way the wind blows across Lake Ontario.
98xc700 06-24-2002, 10:52 PM It's got to be better than last year. Like zrgreen said, It can't be any worse http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/exclamation.gif
Team_Arctic 06-25-2002, 12:00 AM http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif *yeah i know what you mean the biggeest snowfall we got was uhh 6 inches normally they are some of the small ones
Wolfman 06-25-2002, 01:37 AM Well, we all gotta pray to the snow gods, make the appropriate sacrifices that they require, and all leave our freezers and refrigerators open from here on out. * http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I am hoping for a real winter this year as well.
paul yarek 06-26-2002, 01:04 AM if you predict the weather anymore than 3 days ahead around this part of the country then you haven't lived here long or you are just plain lack of brains. if you don't like the weather here just wait 10 minutes.
TallCool1 06-26-2002, 02:36 AM Hate to say it greenstreak, but if the smoke would have any effect on the winter, it just might make it worse by acting like insulation by maintaining heat and not allowing the cold air to move in like it should. *Not a happy thought, just my $.02.
ARCTICZRT600 08-02-2002, 10:33 AM If this current heat wave is any indication, it will be a warmer winter. *This stinks.
jdsmi 08-02-2002, 11:20 AM The latest news from the "Experts" around here is there is another El Ninio event taking shape. *If that's true, it doesn't look good for MN.
revrnd 08-02-2002, 01:02 PM I have to agree with Paul http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif For the most part the forecasting around southern Ontario is hit or miss. I don't think they knew those big storms were going to hit Toronto a couple of years ago.
IndySKS 08-02-2002, 07:55 PM Actually this recent heat wave is good...well maybe. The warmer the great lakes get the longer they stay open and thus the potential for lake effect snow. That is taking that it cools down enough for it to snow and you live or ride in an area that gets lake efect snow. They said this week that it was the second hotest July on record in Toronto .
Cat_Rider 08-02-2002, 09:42 PM When Mount St. Helens in Wa. blew, the next 2 winters were the toughest in history. With so many fires this year, it may get colder and wetter. They have no Idea how El Ninio actually affects us long term because they just discovered that phenominom in the last 5 years. Remember "The year that summer never came" Ben Franklin noted it. He is concidered the first true meterologist in history. There was a volcano that year.
sledcrazy 08-03-2002, 09:24 AM well actually i read that the more particles in the air you will get more snow fall. *it was in the paper one day but i cant remember exactly what was said. *last year there was a lack of particles in the air from no forest fires, and few volcanoes. *the more volcanoes and forest fires *we have the better snowfall.
Bartman 08-03-2002, 10:33 AM The volcano theory is true, it's happened all over the world colder winters from volcanic ash insulating us from heat from the sun, so forest fires could play a roll, as far as El ninio it's supposed to be a mild one compared to the last one in '98.
sledcrazy 08-03-2002, 10:53 PM yes but if you live on the east coast, (northeast) *there is more east coast winter storms because of el nino, even tho its not going to be as strong as the 98 one. *in 98 with el nino we had a big ### ice storm, so with a more milder one we will probably have more snow. *el nino does heat up the average winter temp by about 2 or 3 degrees, but its still around 29. *2 years are never the same. *and it cant be much worse then what we had, but knowing maine we wont get any this year.
revrnd 08-04-2002, 02:05 AM In June of '91, Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Phillipines & put a lot of ash into the atmosphere. I had a good season after that but I think it was because I was laid off a lot *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Anyone have any records for 91/92?
Bartman 08-04-2002, 10:02 AM Oh how I remember the ice storm of '98, I was working for the DOT at the time, alot ! and no power for seven days, no sledding because all the trails were covered with fallen trees, lets hope that doesn't happen for another 100 years or so.
sledcrazy 08-04-2002, 12:02 PM in 91/92 maine had over 100 inches in PORTLAND that year. *or very close to it. *our average is 70 inches. *up north had WAY more then portland, but if portland had 100 inches that year, you can bet up north had like 140 or more. *and you guys have to remember the thing with the sun. *every 11 years we get something with the sun, i cant remember what it is called, but if you look at the snowfall records you can see that every 11 years snowfall has lacked. *the 90/91 season here in maine was like a 50 incher. *the 2001/02 season was like 27 or 30 inches. *so this season SHOULD have a good amount of snowfall, and colder temps.
revrnd 08-04-2002, 05:35 PM Are you thinking of sunspot activity or solar flares? I didn't know either of them affected the weather http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
sledcrazy 08-04-2002, 11:46 PM no i think its are position to the sun in january, its the warmest point. *but its winter so it wont be like 100 degrees when it happends but it will be a few degrees warmer average. *so instead of 26 degrees average temp in january, with the position to the sun, it might be like 31 or so. *which means 40's during the day and high 20's during the night. *not good for snow.
Wolfman 08-05-2002, 12:45 AM In reference to the 11 year cycle, you are referring to the solar maximum. *Yes, this has much to do with global climate patterns.
jdsmi 08-05-2002, 11:17 AM Can anyone recall if there were any weather pattern changes resulting from the Yellowstone fires a few years ago? *Everything I've heard so far is extremely mild in MN, BUT, if the all of the rain we've gotten this summer is the result of the fires, the forcasters could be way off.
paul yarek 08-05-2002, 12:31 PM for someone predicting an 11 year cycle i remember ruts and washouts in the fields 30 years ago. gradually the washouts got smaller because of less rain, while we farmed we filled the washouts in sometimes weekly.
*this has been the first year i can remember since 1980 that there are washouts from the rain, and those were small as the rain was tapering off. i am asking what is the cycle everyone talks about ?
*everyone has a time connected to their weather wisdom, but weather like styles eventually will return when it decides to.
ARCTICZRT600 08-05-2002, 05:15 PM Talked to my dealer yesterday, he said the Snow God was in and asked he has sold alot of snowchecks. *Maybe we are being checked up on. *lol http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
performancex 08-05-2002, 05:53 PM </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">well actually i read that the more particles in the air you will get more snow fall
This is true. *The droplets in the upper atmosphere need particles to cling to in order to combine into bigger droplets and fall to earth. *And to freeze. *You can have supercooled rain when it doesn't find any particles to freeze around.
revrnd 08-05-2002, 06:13 PM They had a bunch of record low temps in Saskatchewan on Friday, either Rocketman is snowed in or ice fishing *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
YellowBelly 08-05-2002, 06:27 PM Boy, I sure wouldn't mind a record snowfall year! Especially if we can sell our house and get something close to the trail!
Come on SNOW!!!!!
http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
sledcrazy 08-05-2002, 06:35 PM paul,
in refrence to the 11 year cycle, every 11 years we are closest to the sun, always in january, so we will be closest to the sun in january 2013. *it DOES not mean the angle is different it just means it is closer, so temps will go up a bit, but not a LOT. *last time this happened was 1991, then it happened this year, or last year whatever. *there is also a slight change in the gulf current which did screw up the weather for the east coast, which is why florida and the carolinas got snow and we didnt.
LicknOutaTheCatsDish 08-05-2002, 10:48 PM it's all speculation...trying to figure what the weather will be like is crazy(but neat to talk about), we get what we will get and ride when we can, some years we have to travel more than others, but I do think we may get some extra lake effect from the lakes being warmer from this summers heat. *I'm just waiting for the months that we can actually start expecting something to really happen!
alscool 08-06-2002, 12:30 PM how about this one...
with all the stuff we're sending into space, the planet is getting lighter and will drift slightly further from the sun making winters longer and cooler. coupled with volcanic *eruptions making better snowmobile seasons.
just a thought http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sleepy.gif
Skidoowes 08-06-2002, 12:34 PM I knew those NASA guys are sledders!
louis 08-06-2002, 01:22 PM Q up your trailer for extended trips. I think we'll be chasing snow again this year.
performancex 08-06-2002, 01:59 PM </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">with all the stuff we're sending into space, the planet is getting lighter and will drift slightly further from the sun
Nah, it doesn't work that way. *As long as everything we send to space stays in orbit around Earth, the total mass/cg/inertia will not change, so we'll stay in the same place.

not too optimistic in Woodbridge are we http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
louis 08-06-2002, 08:08 PM Alscool,
I was optimistic last year.
However I remain committed. Even if I have to go to the North Pole.
