I have been debating whether or not to stud my '97 FormZ. My recent feeling is that it is a waste of money for those of us in deeper snow. However, I do recognize the fact that stopping faster in icy corners and making it up slick hills can make it worth the money. I have seen these "Trail Grabbers" advertised as screwing directly into the lugs (no holes) and costing about $0.80/per. Should I try these? Has anyone had any luck? Do you still use a pattern similar to a stud pattern? Thanks. :christmas:

I put them in my wifes track ( Doo GSX 600 ) last year and they have held up well. I have no complants about them from when I use her sled.

My co-worker put 296 in his track 3 years ago, a few are missing. He likes them still.

I assume that tunnel protectors are necessary. I read they (trail grabbers) come in 3 different lengths, what length do you recommend? Thanks :christmas:

I put tunnel protectors on my wifes, better safe than sorry.
Her sled has a 1" track and I used the 5/8" I think I would need to go to my shop and check for sure.

Two of my friends used them, and hated them. Started tearing lugs. Lost a ton of them. Most were worn down after one ride. But we are in MI. We tend to ride in Minimal snow. And we ride hard.
My 2 cents

I heard that they shouldn't go in lugs less than 1.5 inches, ...the smaller the lug, the easier they are to tear out. I was going to do this (I got 1 inch lugs), but I was steered away by my Yamaha dealership. They recommended 1.075 studs for 1 inch lugs.

Personally I'd rather use the 'Trail Grabbers', but I'm still undecided.

I used them on my viper and didn't have any problems, even in a few minimal snow areas. However, if you have any and I mean any questions you can give Scott a call and talk to "the man". He's on straight shooter IMO.

Ditto on Scott being a straight shooter. I spoke with him today via telephone. He isn't afraid of losing business by being honest, but rather gaining more (almost unheard of anymore). I ordered 192 grabbers 5/8". I will install 144 and see if I need all 192 or not. I have another sled that is studded and have seen backer plates ripped through, track and wheel life reduced greatly, and cords mangled, this is worth a shot (I am not after superior hole shots, only some confidence on the ice and the ability to climb those slick hills). I will update how I like this type of traction as the season allows.
