the small gasket on the powervalve, the one with the 2 bolts in it, not the one that goes onto the motor, the one closest to the clutches leaks a bit on my srx. it is a little bit of black oil resdue that dips onto the pipe. it could be from the oil that was put into the cylinder during summerizing. ever heard of this. should it be replaced or will it seal in self up after a few good runs on the lake. also i put some high heat silicone on the pipes where they attach to the motor, to re seal them since the factory silicone get ruined when take your pipes off. is this necessary? i noticed that the "donuts" for the pipes have some chunks out of them so tat is why i re sealed them cause some of that black resudue was dripp from them. my sled only has 1500 km on it. let me know what you think.

thanks

Tom,

One of my PV's leaked a bit last year when I first fired it up. I tightened up the screws a bit and warmed up the engine. It never leaked at all after that all season. I recommend using the seal on your pipes if you take them off. It not only will maintain proper back-pressure, but also keeps and exhaust residue from messing up the engine compartment.

My power valves never leaked,u can try tightening them but be careful you dont wanna snap those little bolts off.I never put silicone on my exhaust doughnuts,i have the pipes on and off so much it makes a mess, plus mine never leaked without it.

I just discovered the same clutch side powervalve doing what yours is doing....yesterday. I'm going to "rebuild" that side; actually, with 4500 miles on mine, I'm going to redo them all. I'm changing the o-rings (this may be your culprit). They're right up near the area where it's leaking onto the pipe. I'm also going to change both gaskets, the small and large. I also noticed my cable had a few frays where it slides into the valve. So, I'll add cables to all three.

As Chris indicated, it may be just a tad loose and may require tightening. But I've heard too many times that the o-rings are generally the reason for the leaking.

so it is possible that my o rings are shot?? it sat all last season, but it was stored properly by a yamaha dealer. when i looked at the powervalve there was only small amount of carbon on there, the only reason i looked at the pv was because of this gasket, i figured i would just turn it around, but it didnot work, so i think im going to tighten it and if that doesnt work , off to the shop i go. i still havent got the motor hot yet though, and damn it only has 1500km it is hardly broke in yet. this is my first yammy, i switched over from polaris, i hope i made a good choice. i even have a 50$ bet, my buddy has a stock 2004 700 xc and he claims he hasnt lost to and srx, he also claims he is getting 118 on radar. i dont beleive it so i took the bet. i think it is pretty safe, after all it is a triple and it is a srx right. lol

I'm not sure what to tell you. Mine has 4500 miles and that's the only one leaking. I'm not much for leaks, so I opted to go the rebuild route. Hey, give the tightening a shot. If that doesn't work, the two gaskets (small and large) are 99 cents and $2 respectively. The two o-rings are around the same price. You may want to look on the online micofiche from Yamaha and see if your SRX has the "new" o-ring placed right next to the stem of the cable (where it enters into the powervalve. My '02 manual shows only one o-ring, where as the online for the 2002 SRX shows two o-rings. I ordered both and am changing them both.

Regardless of how it was stored, I would think o-rings could be subject to shrinkage and possible dry rot. One would think it would affect all of them, but who knows. I'm awaiting a cable, and once that's in, I'll let you know. The only problem is I'm changing three things, so I'll be unsure which one will have solved it.

so i guess i will wait and see what happens after i tighten them and get a good run in. if it still leaks i guess it is off to the shop i go.

thanks for the info.

heres a little trick i learned. put some brake fluid on the seals. this will cause them to swell up. i did this in a transmission i was working on. did the trick
