iheard a cheaper way to get better traction on ice would be to take a .5 inch hex screw and screw it into your track lug instead of buying studs . will this work?

It's been done. The previous owner of the '00 SKS I have installed some. They didn't last long, and I'm not the type that pulls holeshots at pavement crossings.
A company does make carbide tipped ones, but there was a problem with them tearing out of the track lugs. Not something to look forward to riding in back of somebody that has them installed.

Just as a side note, the carbide studs installed in Camo's new track, similar to those used in car tires, look pretty interesting.....

Studs, screws rip out leaving then lug weaker.

I've been thinking of doing that to mine, but I think the screws would have to be made of hard stuff, and I wouldn't try anything that protrudes much more than 1/4" from a lug. AND I WOULDN'T want to be the guy riding behind me once they-if they losened in my lugs.

Screws might work OK in your Apollo or Gemini, definitely work for your knobbies on your dirt bike on ice, but not too good for anything else.

If you're riding on trails and roads, those screws that get ripped out of the track will find their way into a tire in the summer.

Don't do it.

Well I have been using screws for years for trail riding. Just to give me a little grip on those occasional icy corners. If you are a lake racer looking for traction on ice etc, studs are the only way to go.

I installed the screw in w/carbide units in my '03 proX 800, They worked great,,,, until I drove down a Hard pack & ice covered road. My friend behind lost some paint & I lost about 1/3 of the screws. :cussing:
Went home & took the remaining junk out of my 1 1/4" track :cussing: :cussing:

thats the same story i heard from someone else. the screws just dont stay in. and they wreck the lug on the way out. mike
