Took apart my engine fan covers to address the issue of an exhaust leaking the spent oil/gas residue on the front of my 1978 Pantera 5000 engine.
When I removed the exhaust manifold and the fan cowling I removed 4 exhaust gaskets. 2 each side... One is against the exhaust port of the jug and the cowling, and the other on the face of the cowling and between the manifold.

I looked at an exploded view on a web sight
( http://www.brownsleisureworld.com/Parts/SN...0250-189-1978)/ (http://www.brownsleisureworld.com/Parts/SNOWMOBILE/1978/1978PANTERAFC(0250-189-1978)/) )
that only showed one gasket per port but no indication if it goes between the jug and cowling, or bolt the cowling to the jugs, with the gasket between the manifold and cowling... or is there 2 per side?!?! ANY Assistance would be grateful!!! jim

I would put it back the way you found it using two gaskets per cylinder, that seems to make more sense to me and ensure you don't have an exhaust leak.
Maybe the exhaust manifold was just loose, did you try to tighten it first?

I think I'll keep it the same too... Thanks
Upon taking it apart, I found the out side stud on the PTO side to be striped out and in its place a larger exhaust bolt without the threads being re-tapped, (loose) the gasket against the jug was burnt from it leaking so I ordered new studs and gaskets for the PTO side...
The stud, I just screwed in further into the threads that are good, but found that the new gaskets matched up good to the exhaust ports and manifold... The old ones on it are blocking the ports and manifold by a good 1/4" around... :bash:
I'm going to have to order 2 more gaskets and studs to match every thing... :christmas:
