i am removing my altenator to replace it and we were told to just unbolt it........well i knew it was to easy to be true..as soon as i removed the bolts it moved down and i can't get it off because the belt is holding it there. how do i remove it or loosen the belt.. and how do i put the new one back in.....the car is a 1985 or 86 oldsmobile 98 regency (luxury model)

to relieve the tension on the belt you have to loosen the tensioner. It is either spring loaded or bolted in place. If it is a spring just pry it out of the way or if it is bolted loosen the bolts and slide it out of the way

Yes, take the belt off first. Look at the tensioner for a place to put a breaker bar or a flat for a large wrench. Pull the tensioner so as to loosen the belt and remove it. Pay attention to the belt path. R & R the alternator and replace the belt.
