heinzsnowmobiler 12-31-2004, 04:25 PM i am removing my altenator to replace it and we were told to just unbolt it........well i knew it was to easy to be true..as soon as i removed the bolts it moved down and i can't get it off because the belt is holding it there. how do i remove it or loosen the belt.. and how do i put the new one back in.....the car is a 1985 or 86 oldsmobile 98 regency (luxury model) reveater 12-31-2004, 04:50 PM to relieve the tension on the belt you have to loosen the tensioner. It is either spring loaded or bolted in place. If it is a spring just pry it out of the way or if it is bolted loosen the bolts and slide it out of the way Spaceman 12-31-2004, 04:54 PM Yes, take the belt off first. Look at the tensioner for a place to put a breaker bar or a flat for a large wrench. Pull the tensioner so as to loosen the belt and remove it. Pay attention to the belt path.
