During cold start-up of my 1998 700 GT the machine spudders, then back fires a few times. If I hit the throttle to bring the rpm's up the machine bogs out and will stalls. I have to leave it idle spuddering and backfiring for about 30 sec - 1 minute then hit the throttle and all is fine after that. The machines rpm's kick in and the machine runs great during all speed bands and idles at 1800 once warmed up. Anyone have any ideas where to look. Here is what I've done so far, carbs cleaned, set the air screw at 2 turns out, dpm pump replaced, checked dpm solenoids, new plugs properly gapped at 0.40, new head gaskets, checked oil pump setting.

what is your starting method?
choke?
primer(?)

when the sled is bogging like that, throw the choke in half position and exercise it a bit, playing with the rpms.

This sled doesn't use a choke or primer. It has a DPM system which pressurize the carbs using an air pump. This is why I replaced the air pump thinking this may have been the problem. This issue only happens at first start-up for about 30 seconds to a minute. Usually I get 3-4 really strong back-fires and you can pretty much forget about giving it any gas or it dies. It seems the only thing you can do is wait till its warmed up before you even touch the throttle.

Can someone confirm this? I thought only SDI's don't have chokes.

Wow; learn something new every day.

This sled definitely has no choke. The DPM handles all enriching processes. I'm thinking I an air leak someplace or a bad solenoid. Yesterday a found a bad connector on the stator which was messing up the voltage. Once I fixed that the sled seem to be running MUCH better. Now we have no snow so I can't even go for a test ride:(
