: Insurance
petestoy 07-31-2002, 09:38 AM Has anyone got the name of a good insurance company for snowmobiles. Both my house and car insurance companys have put restrictions on snowmobiles this year. They are limiting them to 700cc's and they want almost as much of a premium as my car. Thanks Pete
FishHog 07-31-2002, 10:12 AM Hey Pete, have you tried the one through the OFSC. *I don't remember the name right now, but they specialize in sleds, so I'm sure they don't have those restrictions.
I'm sure they would be mentioned on the OFSC web site.
FishHog
FishHog 07-31-2002, 10:15 AM OK, it was bugging me, so I looked it up.
Trail Smart - 1-888-404-SLED
I called them a couple of years ago, they were a few bucks more then my current provider so I didn't change, but they were in the ball park.
kj-zrt800 08-06-2002, 01:35 AM I've checked around,and trailsmart is the cheapest I can find.I'm paying 550.00/season cnd. with collision on a 2001 zrt800.
Sled Dogg 08-06-2002, 01:51 AM State farm gave me a cheap rate quote around $200 or 250 for a 500cc sled and that included a clause that i get $5,000 as a replacement cost not the blue book value. I also had two cars insured with them. I was 25 at the time and a clean record. What I'd give for a clean driving record now!!!!!!

Steven Hohman 08-06-2002, 02:15 AM I was using Citizens insurance last season when my 94 v max 500 went boom, I phoned them and they told me that it was covered! *I got $3000 in insurance and bought a 99 v max 500 deluxe for $3200! *I'm not exactly sure how much I pay for the coverage but I get great service.
revrnd 08-06-2002, 02:23 AM Try Liberty Mutual. Mind you I have all my insurance with them. I'm pretty sure what I pay for full coverage (including collision) is what some guys I know pay for just PL & PD.
phazerhater 08-06-2002, 04:09 PM Not sure if you have State Farm up there or not, but it's the cheapest I have found around here. *Plus I get the multi. discount since I go through them for everything....
easy_does_it 08-06-2002, 05:45 PM I'm sure you guys already know this but, if you switch your coverage to just storage for the summer that will help your rates.
revrnd 08-06-2002, 07:34 PM Up here State Farm & Liberty Mutual won't do that for rec. vehicles. Motor vehicles yes.
sledcrazy 08-06-2002, 08:04 PM how much would insurance be for a 16 year old *on a firecat f7
IndySKS 08-06-2002, 08:50 PM I'm with Revrnd ( oh god that doesn't sound good ) try Liberty Mutual . I can get the # for you if you like . I have all my sleds and a car with them.
revrnd 08-06-2002, 09:03 PM Indy, this is for you http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Sledcrazy, are you serious? I wouldn't want to be paying the premium on that one.
sledcrazy 08-06-2002, 10:16 PM well on my 01 mxz 600 its around 300 a year. *thats a 600cc. *people say from the jump from 600 to 700cc is a BIG COST INCREASE. *how much am i looking at?? *my truck insurance with me being 16 is 750 bucks a year. *it would be sad if that sled was more.
Crazy B 08-06-2002, 10:51 PM Try Mass insuance brokers they specilize in sleds and are reasonable if you haven`t got a bad record
revrnd 08-06-2002, 11:25 PM Isn't Happy Harold McAdam involved with them?
f7snopro 08-07-2002, 12:37 AM MASS Insurance is the best rate you will get in Ontario. I pay $139 full coverage for a 96 ZRT6
Mighty RX-1 08-07-2002, 12:57 AM sledcrazy, you better get a price on Insurance before you commit to buying that F-7. *You are in for a big surpise http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif
IndySKS 08-07-2002, 10:26 AM sledcrazy: *No offence but if you are 16 and have a Truck and a mxz600 and are trading up to a F7 , it doesn't sound like money is much of a problem for you, so the cost of insurance shouldn't really matter. You must have a real good part time job! Whats the secret ? I could use some extra cash to pay for my son's colleage education.
sledcrazy 08-07-2002, 12:57 PM indy,
i work on a lobster boat that pays pretty good money for the whole summer, my truck only costed 2000. *and i make payments on my mxz 600, and yes insurance payments will be a problem if they are as much as my #### truck.
sledcrazy 08-07-2002, 01:23 PM well i just called my insurance company, and they said for me to have it under my name would be 2,200 a year on the firecat f7, with everything, liability, fire, collision........ * *on a 500 it would still cost like 1500. *thats a BIT MUCH.
jdsmi 08-07-2002, 04:16 PM With insurance quotes like that, we might be seeing a whole bunch of early-season ordered sleds in the classifieds with 0 miles. *Who in their right mind would pay that? *I pay around $350/yr for full cvg on a 96ZRT6 (State Farm). *I thought that was bad enough to where I dropped collision on my other sleds.
sledcrazy 08-07-2002, 04:42 PM well it looks like i am not getting a firecat, i dont want a 500 so im not *getting the f5, im giong with the PRO X 600 i guess. *my dad already has insurance for my mxz 600, so it wont be much more for a pro x 600. *for these sleds: *99 500 XC, 96 ultra 700, and a 01 mxz 600 we pay 450 bucks.
revrnd 08-07-2002, 05:20 PM When I was getting my insurance a couple of years ago, the agent said (pre-9/11) that retail price was the big item when costing out insurance. If that was the case a loaded up 500 touring type sled would be more to insure than a plain jane 600. As a sled gets older (jdsmi's 96 ZRT6) the premium should go down. I imagine they would just give you book value on the sled if it was written off. What would the above sled be worth on the market today? And what was it worth new?
jdsmi 08-07-2002, 05:57 PM If that's the case (based on price-paid), the ProX600 shouldn't be much different than a Firecat. *As previously mentioned, there is probably a price jump on the higher cc sleds (700cc and up). *Have the dad get a quote on the F7. *I bet it'll be a BIG difference.
I still think $350/yr is steep for a 7 year old sled but it doesn't sound that far out of line.
revrnd 08-07-2002, 06:09 PM </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (jdsmi @ Aug. 07, 2002, 3:57pm)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I still think $350/yr is steep for a 7 year old sled but it doesn't sound that far out of line.
It might scare you then if you went to get insurance for a '03 sled *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
jdsmi 08-07-2002, 06:25 PM Yup! *One of these years I'll make the jump and whine all the way to and from the agent's office. *Sounds like I'm not alone though.
ARCTICZRT600 08-07-2002, 06:50 PM My ins. co. canceled my policy when they stopped insuring sleds.
performancex 08-07-2002, 08:00 PM That's too bad, sledcrazy. *I was gonna get an MXZ700 in January, 'till I found out the cheapest coverage I could get would be over $1700/yr. *And I'm 24 and married.
sledcrazy 08-07-2002, 08:49 PM ok guys i just found the cheapest insurance i could get wiht a 500,000 liability or whatever. *it covers liability, fire, stolen, collision..... the whole works, for 900 bucks a year. *thats for an 03 firecat f7 and me being 16. *for an 03 pro x 600 it would be around 550 a year. *american modern insurance is the company.
LadyK 08-07-2002, 08:54 PM I am insured with MASS insurance and I pay $540 per year for an 02 mxz renegade. That is max insurance....write it off and get another one next day. I only have a $300.00 ded.
revrnd 08-07-2002, 09:04 PM I forgot, that's another way you can reduce your premium, raise your deductible. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif
Team_Arctic 08-07-2002, 11:09 PM sledcrazy i dont know if anyone mentioned it but you could have you dad get the title and stuff in his name and have the insure through him and it would prly be cheaper then yours.... im 16 and i pay 120/yr *but mind i have a 92 550 for a sled *its under my dads name and it if was mine i would have it for about 250-300( so the agent says) thats a big jump so maybe you could save a few $$ with your dads name... just a thought
You guys are getting raped. For both sleds, 99 FZ 500 and 02 MXZ 700,its 500 bucks for full coverage and 100 dollar deductable. Actually I pay half that cause I only insure them for about 5 months. My homeowners covers them otherwise in storage in the garage. Yes it covers them,I double checked with my agent. Granted we insure all other insurables thru the same company so we do get the bulk discount. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Also no claims and good driving records help.
ARCTICZRT600 08-08-2002, 08:44 AM Performance, wait til you're 25 and see the drop in rates.
another MXZ 08-08-2002, 12:27 PM boy you guys in the US are getting raped for insurance. In Manitoba, Canada I pay $280 cdn for fire, theft, Vandalisam and 1 million liability for my 99 mxz 600. But I guess in the states you need 50 million liability bucause of "Jim the Hammer Shapiro". hehe. Up here to get collision added it cost another $250 extra for my sled.
ARCTICZRT600 08-08-2002, 01:05 PM Boy, do I feel used, abused and cheap now. *Thanks. *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
performancex 08-08-2002, 02:18 PM </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Performance, wait til you're 25 and see the drop in rates
Well, yeah. *In 8 months and 9 days (I'm counting) I will have a clean record and I'll be over 25.
ARCTICZRT600 08-08-2002, 03:32 PM Well if I forget, Happy Birthday. *Enjoy life it's all down hill.
petestoy 08-08-2002, 11:34 PM Thanks for all the help guys it seems like Mass insurance is trying to get their own policy setup because they told me to call back in 2 weeks and some of the restrictions would be that I would have to give them my car insurance.
IndySKS 08-09-2002, 08:03 PM petestoy: Thats called "tied" selling and is Illegal in Ontario. Check with other Insurance companys on this before you sign the deal. The way the might phase it is they will only cover you if you are a perfered customer...to be perfered you must have another viecle insured with them. It's a very thin line. I moved my car to Liberty Mutual to have them cover my sleds ( 3 ) , the car Ins was $10 /year cheaper than the broker I had dealt with since I was 16. Not to mention they saved me about $1200.00 on sled ins. / year .
revrnd 08-27-2002, 10:13 PM I finally found my insurance info http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif
1 M liability
all perils
500 deductible
$236 year.
The policy was renewed in May.
all REVd up 08-27-2002, 10:47 PM My buddy informed me he got a letter from the company that underwrites sled insurance for MASS and their stated that they will not insure any sleds over 750cc. I was refused coverage from Mass last year because I forgot about 1 speeding ticket that I got 2 years and 10 months ago. Since I signed the paper work and did not inform them of this ticket they said I held back information and they cancelled the policy.
Nice eh. Do not know why they ask for any ticket info when they pull your record anyways. Ended up with Zenith Insurance company which is part of the trail smart program.
Machzzzz1 08-27-2002, 11:09 PM I would get out of Mass Insurance. *Any company that will insure a 750cc but not a 800 has problems and will probably really hassle you if you ever have a claim.
Chubby 08-28-2002, 01:22 AM The Mass Ins. thing was posted about 2 weeks ago, Anyone with them is in for a big suprise. Stay as far away from them as you can get.
BGTRK19472 08-28-2002, 04:22 PM I would call or search online for a independent insurance agent and get a quote, at the same time have them quote all your insurance needs. Alot of times you can get a discount if you combine with auto and home ploicy.
revrnd 09-19-2002, 02:11 PM This was in today's Toronto Star. I have no idea if they were insuring sleds.
z800rotax 09-19-2002, 03:22 PM My broker has me with lloyds and the prices are fair.
97 Ram $890 year
00 Cherokee $645 year
01 mxz 800 $265 year
95 form s $101 year
All have full coverage but the 95 forms. The whole insurance
industry does leave a bad taste in your mouth though http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
mustardman 09-19-2002, 03:28 PM I pay $133 a year, full coverage 1999 mxz 600 ( 23 yrs old)
Liberty Mutual
shaft 09-19-2002, 07:41 PM A little off topic.. but why is it cheaper to have insurance on 2 vehicle than just one. Doesn't 2 vehicles increase your chances of an accident?? Or are we just being riped off..as usual??
dooman 09-19-2002, 08:25 PM your only driving on at a time.
tommy TX 09-20-2002, 02:00 PM Try Allied Ins. I pay $450 for 4 sleds *full coverage.
02 Z570ss
02 Z370
99 Z370
97 EXT 600 triple.
Do the Doo 09-22-2002, 09:44 PM http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif One think some of you need to take in account is if the insurance is state regulated (in the US). This will increase the rates for that particular state as well as prevent other insurance companies from doing business within that particular state. Insurance companies loose $$$ in regulated states so they will not offer their services i.e. Massachusetts is regulated. There are only a handful of insuarnce companies that do business here. Offereing sled insurance is not one of their products. This has been a pain in my arss since I moved here but never ride here. Sleds are not even stored here but it is where I live, not garaged. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
Machzzzz1 09-22-2002, 10:19 PM I just qualified for Fleet insurance with state farm because I got so many things insured with them. *I hope this will save me some money because with the money i spend on insurance each year I could buy a few sleds for everyone on this site.
I really hate insurance. *I got into a argument with statefarm last week. *They wanted to raise the insurance on my MachZ by 10dollars a months. *I asked why since I never had a claim on a sled yet (Knock on wood). *They say because other insurance companies are refusing to insure higher cc engine sleds we are taking an extra risk. *
I SNAPPED and LOST it. *I explained on the edge of politness that the only extra risk they took was calling me to let me know. *After reviewing my record they agreed to let me keep my rate, only to have them put me on a fleet with other members of my family which will change everything. *
I hope you guys arnt getting calls about your rates going up.
