I have a 1991 Yamaha Phazer that needs a piston. The problem is, I can't seem to find the bolts to take the jugs off. Does this motor have to be taken apart from the bottom? I've done 10 or 12 piston replacements, but I never had to take the whole thing apart to get at the piston, so I'm hoping I'm just missing something.
Thanks, Dan

You must be having a bad day...I've had them!
Remove the air cowling from the top of the motor (If I remeber right three bolts which were a #$%^ to get off of mine). You will have to disconnect the boost bottle from the air cowling. Your then looking at the jugs. There's 8 bolts on top of each head between all of the cooling fins. 4 hold the head to the cylinder and the other four hold head to cylinder and cylinder to cranck case. You'll have to disconnect the exhaust, exhaust y pipe, and carbs before you can remove the jugs.
Leave the reed cages in the jugs until you remove the jugs.
Good Luck!

I got all 8 nuts off. All that is left are some studs sticking out. The jug should come off now? I'll go tap on them a bit more, but they sure seem to be on there pretty solid! Snowing good right now, trails will be open tomorrow, I gotta get this done!

if your carbs are off of the machine (or off of the jugs, and the exhaust pipe if also off....your jugs WILL come off. They may be rusted at the bottom or on the studs...try penetrating oil...good luck

actually...why do you need to replace the piston?? If it overheated, is it possible that the lower part of the cylinder expanded enough to be stuck into the lower end?? Something to think about...

I got it, I never had to beat one that much before, but they came off. I needed a new piston because the fan belt broke, burnt a hole in a piston. Motor is back together, now I have to get new fuel lines and I'll be riding tonight! Thanks!
