I had a 95 GSXR 750 *it had a big bore kit in it to bring it up to a 907.I traided it for my sleds. BOY do i miss it *I put about 3500.00 in to the motor and the frame 140 rear wheel hp. I could walk an R1 and a 929 in a quater.

This is the bike I have now but I think it may be a bit pricey for your first road bike. *It's a 2000 Ducati 996

Take a look at anything in the 600 class from say, 98 and up.

Honda CBR 600's are the most reliable, they aren't the best at anything but they do everything well.

The Kawasaki is probably the most comfortable and they have one of the best engines, really good low end power but the transmission is like a tractor.

Yamaha and Suzuki are the 2 best right now the R6 or the GSX-R are both amazing bikes.

They are all excellent bikes: all under 450lbs, 100+ hp.

I crashed my R6 2 years ago during a track day at about 130mph. I now have some very interesting hardware in my right wrist.

As with sleds, be careful of anything that's been modified. You don't want to buy anyone else's mistakes.

Take the bodywork off and look at the engine cases for crash damage, especially one with aftermarket bodywork.

bodywork is easy to replace but most people will not replace case covers unless the are broken.

Look at the front and back tire as well. You can usually tell what type of rider owns the bike by the rubber, look for an unused portion about 3/4 in wide on each side of the tire. *This means the bike hasn't been leaned and cornered hard. Also look to see if the ends of the footpegs are ground down.

Man, I could go on forever.

Send me an email if you want any more info.

I've been racing motocross and road bikes since I was 8 years old and I have been riding on the street for over 10 years, so I have some experience.

Hope that helps.

I had a '98 CBR 600 and loved it. *I sold it last year planing on getting a R-1, but wife wants me to get a Cruiser(not gonna happen) *Next spring I think I am going to pick up a yammi YZF 600R. *IMO that bike is the perfect mix of performance and comfort. *The YZF sits up a little more which is easier on the wrists on longer rides, and the pegs aren't back quite as far as a all out performance bike. *With a little work it can be tuned to beat a R-6 and is allot more comfortable for you and a 'lil miss on the back. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
If you don't care about comfort and just want blistering speed, I would go with a gixer 750+, or a yammi R-6/R-1. *Probably not the best choice for a first bike though. *Them bad boys will scare the crap out of ya!LOL
Great looking Ducati BTW!!! http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/inlove.gif

Hey Phazerhater,

Nice bike, you are right they are really comfortable bikes and they are about 8/10 of an R6 in stock form. *One of the guys I ride with used to have one and it was great for long rides.

2 years ago we rode from home(around Toronto, Canada) to Daytona and everyone was on Pure Sports machines. *By the time we got there we were all complaining about sore backs and wrists while this guy wanted to continue on to Miami.

Just wondering what you do at Grand Forks, Are you a pilot? *I am in the process of getting my pilots license right now. *

Obviously, I don't get to fly anything like the stuff you guys have but its still lots of fun. *

I just have to figure out how to get my sled into a plane and then I can just follow the snow.

Later,

DP

Sold the crotch rockets when the kids came.
My wife and I love to ride but with small kids it's not worth the risk (for us).
We will have one when the kids get in High school.
Had a 1983 Kaw GPX 750 after High school.
Nice bike, after it turned 60,000 miles it did start to jump out of 2nd gear on hard acell.
Then bought 1986 Kaw Ninja 1000.
That was a SUPER bike, the wife and I both loved it.
We could both ride up north, go on long trips and the bike was fast (at the time) and comfortable. Sold it to a buddy it now has over 70,000 HARD miles and the only thing it has needed was batterys and a cooling fan! He now has a ZX 12 loves it.
The last bike was a 1988 Suzuki GSXR 750 Slingshot.
Both me and the wife did't care for it.
The only way the bike would feel good (or normal) was if you are beating on it and thats hard to do with someone on the back. It would dart around at low speed, had to rev it to the moon to make power....
The only problem I had was the CDI box went out at 11,000 miles.
If we went for a 1 hour ride we both hurt after it. Sold it after about 17,000 miles.
Do any of your friends have a bike?
Ride your buddys and take your girl. If it feels good after a long ride, buy it.
I'd look for a clean Ninja ZX 11 D2, still fast rides nice and wont brake.

Rob,
* *I have a friend that bought *a 2000 GSX-R 750 Brand new. He rode it three times last year, once just to take it to his new house. It has 2,500 miles, two expensive helmets, brand new extra yusa battery, and i believe a cover and tank bra. I also think it has a battery tender. Last i knew he wanted $6k for his payoff. It was bike of the year for 2000 FYI. It wouldn't be as comfy as a F4 but it'll smoke it. I don't thinbk you'd want a 600 after meeting you. You'd fit a 750+ bike much better, and it'll have the power to move you. Let me know and I can give you his # when you call.
