We finally got some snow. My kids were bombing around all day on the 89 Indy 500. After about 6 hours of riding, the sled died. According to #2 son, what happened was he was climbing up a 20' hill and the track stopped turning when he revved the motor, so he shut it off and came to get me.

I trudged out to the field (of course at night and away from civilization). The sled started first pull, but there was no headlight. The clutch was engaging at 4000 RPM, but the sled wouldn't move and the engine was straining to get over 4000 RPM. It had no power. Finally, it lunged forward and we nursed it home. The headlight glowed a dull orange unless we brought the revs up near 6500RPM, then it lit up.

At first I thought it might be a jackshaft issue, but now I'm thinking I might have lost the magneto, the alternator, or something like that. Could a bad coil cause this problem? Mechanic stuff is a breeze but electrical systems are black magic to me. Any help would be appreciated.
