I service this guys '00 500 XCSP w/exhuast valves and just went through it for him last week before he headed to the U.P. for the weekend. He said that it ran on one cylinder all weekend long. He brought it to a local dealer and they told him it was probably water in the carbs ar that they were dirty. They cleaned them (after I had completely cleaned them 2 days before) and sent him on his way. Problem solved, right? Wrong. Brought it back to the dealer who then said it was water in the fuel---no one else in the group had any problems with their fuel from the same gas stations in over three fill-ups. He said that it seemed to use a lot of oil. I cleaned the carbs well as I had mentioned before, cleaned the exhaust valves even though they were pretty clean, cleaned the clutches, Installed a new (wrong size) belt our local dealer gave him and popped in some new plugs. Is the excessive oil useage due to it only running on one cylinder and having to give it more throttle to keep it moving or could it be the oil pump out of adjustment? If it is the pump, how do you properly adjust it? What else could it be? It's running stock 410 main jets and everything else is stock. The sled only has 1400 miles on it. Please help!!--Bleedin'

Is it a spark or fuel problem? Check for spark, maybe quick compresion test. Then you know forsure it is fuel problem. The excessive oil consumption could quit possibly be due to having a bad cylinder. I'm sure he was running with the throttle pretty much wide open to keep up.

I have a few comments: #1) improper jetting is not a result of an engine suddenly running on one cylinder, so forget blaming jetting. Excessive oil consumption, the average sled consumes approx 1 quart per 85-100 mi., that too most likely has nothing to do with the engine running on one cylinder. There is an index mark on the pump arm, and another on the pump housing. Line them up at engine idle, uising the barrel nut at the pump and that's it. Oil pumps either work, or they don't. Always check the basics first. My first suggestion: do a compression check, to rule out (or worse, yes) a burned piston. Check for air leaks using carb cleaner, specifically spray around the PTO crank seal, and the carb to cyl. intake boot. These are known trouble spots. It also could be something as stupid as an arcing plug wire, or a bad plug cap. Don't rule out water/ice in the fuel. Thats the #1 reason sleds burn pistons. Toss in a bottle of drygas to rid any moisture in the fuel system.
