A central New York snowmobile racer was killed during a competition in Malone, NY.

Douglas Bellinger, 39, of Boonville, Oneida County, died as he soared over the track's finish line Saturday.

Police said that Bellinger drove his snowmobile over the two snow hills at the end of the main track and became airborne.

His snowmobile hit the ground hard, causing his chest to hit the handlebars. He was then thrown from the sled.

Bellinger was transported to a nearby hospital where he died a short time later. He began racing in March 1998.

He leaves behind a wife and small children.
