: General Clutch Question
fast426 01-11-2005, 09:37 PM How hard should it be to opne the secondary by hand? On mine (ZRT800 with clutch kit) it is impossible. ON my buddies T-cat with cluthc kit, I can do it. Is it normal to be really hard? I have the kit just how they said.
michahicks 01-11-2005, 09:54 PM Geeez, how hard is hard? Are you talking about turning back the moveable sheave, or trying to push it back as in you were trying to get the belt off?
Drive it, go from there after you see what it's doing if you have it assembled properly.

I'm not concerned if it is put together right I am concerned that is may be out of adjustment. I haev ahd it this way for a whiel, but today I changed some things, and I compared it to my buddies who sled is here as well. I mean either way, trying to pull hte belt up to separate thewm, or mainly trying to turn the movable one. And I mean hard, like hard as you can.
michahicks 01-12-2005, 06:19 AM Is there a chance you may have put an extra 1/3 turn preload on that spring during reassembly? If not, I don't know what you could have done wrong. Sounds like you've got a pretty stiff setup.
Grimm 01-12-2005, 06:39 AM I have my secondary set at 20 pounds after putting in a new spring. It is a lot more difficult to move the sheaves apart than before. If you're finding it impossible to move the sheaves apart, it may be binding or set too hard.
How many pounds lateral pressure do you have it set at?
fast426 01-12-2005, 09:15 AM How do you check this?

fast426 01-12-2005, 09:21 AM How do you check this?, the squeeze?
I only turned it till the first hole it lined up with. The units move freely with no sproing hooked up, so I just think I may have too much spring tension. My whole complaint is that teh sled does not have the upper end pull/top speed. Wouldn;t this be a characteristic of too much squeeze? Thanks
rampage 01-12-2005, 09:21 AM In general, the bigger the motor, the harder it will be to open, but on almost any clutch that is 'wound' it should still be possible to 'spin' it open. (Ski-doo RER secondaries _are_ impossible to open by hand because they use more spring tension to compensate for no torsional-loading of the spring... Either that or maybe I'm just week, but I've never seen anyone else be able to open one by hand either...)
You can get a rough measure of spring tension using a fish scale, you have to fab some kind of a hook to let it hook on to the sheave of your secondary at the outer radius. Sounds like your secondary might be over-wound to me...
Grimm 01-12-2005, 09:31 AM I use a fish scale as well. On the outside of one of the sheaves, I hook up to a hole near the outer edge and pull laterally while holding the other sheave still. Same kind of twisting action like when you load the secondary.

all depends on what you have in your pri, as too how much squeeze you need. if you are slipping your belt at high speed you have too much.(should show rubber marks on pri clutch near outside edge) the standard preload is 11-17 #s per bombi but with clutch kits or custom clutching you may end up alot higher it really all depends.you need to measure your pull on your sec to see where your at then adjust accordingly.pm me your complete pri and sec setup and ill get you straightened out if you want. i do lots of racing summer and winter so i can help.
