Snowmobiling stuntman who rode through wall of fire dies
Vancouver- Josh Chapman, a 23 year old man who rode a snowmobile through a gasoline-fuelled wall of for an extreme sports video, has died in hospital.
"It was being videotaped," Sergeant Tracy Hardy of the RCMP said yesterday.
"we're still trying to get behind that, researching that and investigating that angle."
Police have seized videotape, but Sgt. Hardy refused to say what it was being shot for when the accident happened on July 20 in Squamish, about 60 kms (40 miles) north of Vancouver.
Mr. Chapman, described by police as a "sponsored snowboarder", died in hospital over the weekend. "He was extremely badly burned", Sgt. Hardy said.
Mr. Chapman rode his snowmobile - on an asphalt road - through a wall of flame set up as part of a partyheld in an industrial park, police say.
As Mr. Chapman, doing a wheelie, hit the fiery wall, additional gasoline was added to create more flame, police said.
Mr. Chapman was not wearing a fire-resistant suit.
"He goes through this big, flaming wall of fire and, of course, ignites", said Sgt. Hardy.
Police have had a hard time with the case to date because few of the witnesses or participants would talk she said.
"There was a party; people were drinking. I guess there was a fear of getting into trouble."
When police arrived, they found a number of drunk revellers, open drinking and live music police said.
