Tell your buddy to try jetting down one size to a 450 main, this will get rid of the "dark" plugs. As for the gas problems tell him to try a bottle boost it will make a big diffrence.

These are just a few changes I've made to my 01 XC800, I also added some Boysen Power reeds now I can get just over 100miles to a tank, still not great but better then before. (By the way i sled in eastern Ontario which is about the same evevation as Michigan so set up should be about the same.)

Had an 01 800XC - all sorts of problems - biggest of which was continually freezing carbs (huge fuel consumption issues) and lack luster performance. *Dealer installed heated carbs and 430 mains and put needle clip in 2nd position from top. *Everything else stock. *Machine finally ran acceptably, and fuel mileage was reasonable *(I did not handle bar it across lakes if really cold out.) *No problems with sledding over the 100 mile range (company was always a ZR800, and MXZ 800s, thus had to keep up). *This year's 800XC is a completely different sled - do yourself a favour (if able) and get rid of the 01 800 and get onto an 02 800. *FYI - this past week, did a tour - 135 miles and still had 5+ litres of fuel in tank. *Mileage approached XC600's!

I added a Tour Buddy to my 01. We are still dinking with it. My 02 is the best out of the box big bore sled I have ever owned. I go 340 before I suit up and get 12 to 13 mpgs.
