vapourtrail 01-26-2005, 12:00 PM on the way to work monday on my snowmobile and i couldn't believe my eyes.right in front of me a large bird flew right across the trail and landed in a tree right beside the trail.i stopped and backed up to see what kind of bird it was and it turned out to be a great grey owl.only on a snowmobile trail have i ever seen anything like that............. :D has anyone else seen any animals on or near the trail?
01MxzNightRider 01-26-2005, 12:13 PM Its very common for us the come across Deer and Moose on the trail. If the snow has a thick layer of crust the deer really stay on the trail. Somewhere in Maine we had some birds eat right out of our hands, that was another neat thing.
wecker20 01-26-2005, 12:19 PM I spotted a bald eagle while riding behind my house. Went back home and took a pic. of it. Pic didn't turn out that great because the bird was a good 300 yds away. Got a pic of it in flight too. It was eating the carcass of a deer I had shot and processed.
whanker57 01-26-2005, 02:37 PM one time when i was probably 12 yrs old, I was riding my old 67 Olympique behind my house and we saw a snowy owl. (I'm not sure if that is the technical term for it but thats what I call it) Thats probably the coolest thing I've seen on a sled...
01adrenaline800 01-26-2005, 02:55 PM after a rain and freeze where i live deer like the trails. i know 2 people who have hit them on sleds at night. mostly though i only see deer
Snowride 01-26-2005, 03:08 PM Deer around here can be a problem at times. Last week I had to slam on the brakes and missed one by only a couple of feet. Other common sites are moose, fox, racoons, rabbits, squirrels and dogs but they usually have their master attached with a leash. :D
Grimm 01-26-2005, 03:23 PM I've seen deer aplenty. I saw my first wild turkey about a month ago. Man are they ever huge! Too bad I wasn't about 30 seconds earlier, else I would have had quite a dinner :p
A few years ago, I was on a trip with a couple of friends and each of them came around a corner and ran over a grouse. So we ate them, delicious!
I had a close call with a deer hopping in between a couple of our sleds while riding at night. I wouldn't want to hit one of those though.
rmkman 01-26-2005, 03:34 PM I just seen an owl last sunday while riding also. That is the only time I have seen an owl while riding. That thing was much larger than I expected it to be, I think it would not think twice before snatching up my little 25lb dog.
rampage 01-26-2005, 03:44 PM I saw an owl when riding once, but I'm not sure what kind it was. It even stayed on the dead tree it was on when we stopped, i guess it didn't feel threatened. Looked at us for a few minutes and then casually flew off. I think that was somewhere by cadillac.
We saw black bear cubs on one of the foot paths at tequamenon once. (It was winter and we rode our sled there but it was one of the paths you can only walk on.) People were trying to take pictures of the cubs, but I was more worried about where mama bear was and whether she was on the trail between me and my sled. Thankfully we mama bear didn't show up.
One of the neatest things I've seen in the woods (summer time, not on a sled) was a flying squirrel. I didn't even know we had flying squirrels in michigan, and I saw it 1st and none of my friends believed me. We camped out under the tree for 15 minutes, (ok, maybe we flung a couple of pebbles too...) and sure enough, we got it to jump and fly again. Those things can glide a long ways, then they land on the next tree, run up 20 or 30 more feet and then jump again. In a few seconds they're gone into the woods...

Your 1st turkey? We have them everywhere. They use to roost in the trees above my driveway. About 30 of them crapped at the same time as I backed out of the driveway one night. Just cleaned my truck too. I'm not sure what that was all about. They must crap when they get scared.
dpaige 01-26-2005, 04:15 PM I had a wolf, yes a wolf jump out in front of me on the 711 trail near Magnetawan 2 weeks ago.
I know it wasn't a coyote, it was FAR too large, I have a 130lb bull mastiff and this thing was nearly twice the size of my dog.
Not sure where the rest of the pack was, we only saw the one but it was DEFINITELY a wolf.
gravy davey 01-26-2005, 04:31 PM Lots of deer some elk coyote's and bald eagles.About two years I almost hit a bull elk, came around a corner and there he was about 20 feet away.He just stood there and looked at us for about 30 seconds and then walked off into the woods.
FlyingDutchman 01-26-2005, 05:09 PM I've seen lots of deer, but only one Porcupine. It was right in the middle of the railbed, trail B106E just north of Eldorado. It rolled itself up into a ball, it's defense mechanism I guess. I had enough room to go around it, but I didn't waste anytime doing it. I thought I was going to get a leg full of quills.

I quess that would be a cheap way of studding a track. :D
poorsledder 01-26-2005, 06:44 PM A deer while riding today wanted to ride two up with me. Thing luckily decided not to at the last second. Ive seen a porcupine on the way to my firends house while going down a road, and we were going to go back and shoot it because they are real pains in the but, but their were people camping on the land.
DOO THE DOO 01-26-2005, 07:25 PM Well just before christmas I was riding my g/f's V-max 500 she was on the back and she told me to slow down because there was lots of deer around and you know good old me just because she said slow down I go faster about 130km/h on a good straight stretch then came to a corner and got it wowed to about 80km and right there a huge buck....the High beams and keen eyes and about 40km..good scare and a good smack in the helmet :p
me&mymxz 01-26-2005, 08:10 PM Saw one of those big owls just after christmas with my daughter on the back. It was on the local trails in Holland Landing. We stopped and watched. It didn't seem to mind. Just kept turning its head looking a round. It was huge.
