Hi There,
My 1996 440 was always reliable until last year when it quit. It was not getting any gas. I recently took apart the carbs and they were a mess, completely gummed up and full of ice & white sludge. The jets were completely plugged up too. They are now squeaky clean and I am still not getting gas. I separated the gas line just before the fuel pump and saw that gas was flowing freely from there, so I am assuming I need to replace/repair the fuel pump. Does anyone know if this is difficult to repair? (I saw a kit for only $12 that I thought I'd buy)
Thanks very much,
Jordan.

If you had so much stuff in the carbs maybe check your tank and the lines. Make sure the vacuum line is good no cracks and then yes you can rebuild the pump also a new pump is only $30 bucks or so good luck

its insanely easy to rebuild it. there's like a few gaskets and a diaphram. Should only take a half hour or less. and if u mess it up its really cheap to replace.
I rebuilt the fuel pump on my 95 440 and its as simple as hell just take it apart and make note of were each gasket goes

Yup, super simple to do. Might as well buy 2 kits while your at it just in case. Make sure to test it before you put it back on. :)

You said you removed the fuel line just before the fuel pump do you mean on the inlet (feed from the fuel tank) line, or the output (to carburators) line. Fuel should pour out of the supply line. disconnect the fuel line at the carbs, and pull the engine over severall times, if fuel splashes out, the pump is good, and you still have dirt in your carbs. All it takes is a spec of dirt in the pilot jet passage and the sled will run horrible, and barely start.
