: Dsl cable internet
highlandergerman 08-15-2002, 03:40 PM They are coiming through the area and instaling fiber optics and i was wondering if anyone has any expieience with these cable modems and the interet.
*
Any info would be great, speed, price, * the good, *the bad , the ugly. *
ps. *i am currently booting up at 50000. bps.
phazerhater 08-15-2002, 03:54 PM Where I'm at Cable is faster than DSL. *Average download is around 400kb and can get "spurts" as high as double that. *However, if you are close to a main DSL line you can get faster speeds than cable and you always get the same speed.
As far as price, I pay about $30 or $40 a month for their service and that includes the modem and LAN card if you don't alreay have one(which you should). *Not sure on DSL prices, but I think its more....
NHIcegator 08-15-2002, 05:44 PM Well I don't know the numbers but I have it here,it's great,fast(compared to dial-up),comes in a package with phone,cable and internet for about 100 bucks a month,never had a problem yet,about 7 months now.
Pages load fast, and the phone still works.
I love it http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
jwheeler 08-15-2002, 05:57 PM DSl is faster for me because there is a hub right behind my house and dsl is a more reliable than cable, because it is your own line when you get it so its always fast, but with cable when there is alot of people online it will be way slower than if you were there all by yourself, so it depends on your situation, i would go with DSL. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif oh yea i pay 20.00 a month Canadian because i own my own modem and network card.
Sled Dogg 08-15-2002, 07:13 PM I have cable and it rocks but so does dsl. I pay $20 month for cable. I'd spend the 50 or 100 for a good cable modem as it only takes about 9 to 12 months to pay for it's self compared to renting. Same with a card as they are cheap and easy to install. One thing though is that when was the last time you lost cable comared to the phone outages. I've lost cable once for a short time

Bartman 08-15-2002, 10:41 PM I'll give 2 thumbs up for cable, I have had it since this spring and have connected as high as 900 kbps! you can check your speed at www.speedtest.com, it's worth the money, you'll never go back to dial-up again.
I've had almost all possible forms of "cable" internet.. First I had normal cable in holland, which basically sucked ###. downloads went at max 30kB/s or something, at night. This stuff is shared with the whole neighbourhood so if a lot of people are online you have no bandwidth. At daytime speeds could be down to 2kB/s or something. In Holland it costs around $30/month.
Then I had LAN, best internet connection one can have! 10 Mbit/s down and up, so 20 Mbit in total. That's more than most webhosting companies have! And all for yourself, not shared with anyone. 10 Mbit just for you, and that was for around $20/month (only available in Scandinavia afaik).
Then I had ADSL, which kind of sucked after the LAN, but it was better than the cable anyway. 80kB/s for just me was what I had. Speeds can be different between providers. We also have an ADSL provider here that gives you 2.5 Mbit/s, but it all depends on who's operating in the area where you live. This costed me around $25/month.
Now after I moved again, I can't get any form of broadband. The only alternative I have is RadioLAN. I signed up for it, but don't know much about the speeds yet. At night it can be extremely fast I've hear (up to 900 kB/s) but at daytime it's around 20k/s most of the time. And this is #### expensive also.. It's about $25/month, and signing up costs $500, because you get some kind of stupid antenna.
Yes this stuff actually goes thru the air http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Hope this helps a bit. I'd kill for ADSL right now after having been on 56k modem for 4 months already.. EVERYTHING is better than modem so I'd say go for it http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Rottie 08-16-2002, 10:02 AM I have a T1 at work and soon..at home
Sled Dogg 08-16-2002, 06:17 PM Oh man Rottie, your going to love it. It is truelly instant if your software is set up correctly.

Wolfman 08-16-2002, 08:12 PM T3 at work. *Ran a speed test yesterday from here and got 6048kps!! *My neighbour and I finally got the wireless ethernet connection working between our houses as well. *Now I'm sharing a satellite internet service. *They can be highly variable on transmission rate, but I'll take it over a 26.4k on the best of days dialup connection - with a 56k modem. *I'd rather give my neighbours 20 bux a month anyway than the joke of an isp that I've had to put up with.
IndySKS 08-16-2002, 08:20 PM Ok this is a dumb question but how do you find out what you down load speed or connection speed is ? I am on DSL and pay $40/month. It is great compared to dial up , and as someone else said...your phone is still useable.
Ok I just uploaded a page to my web site and the FTP program said I was sending at 40,000bps. Does that sound right? Things are a bit screwy with the FTP program , I have to use my dial up connection to connect to my IP . The FTP program won't send through the DSL
Steven Hohman 08-17-2002, 01:36 AM Broadband makes the internet a different place, you'll love it, as we all have. *I use 1 way cable here (it still uses a phoneline to send data) and it reaches speeds of 10 mbps *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Of coarse, sending things it is a basic 56k, but I don't mind that since I only seem to download things, not upload them.
Steven Hohman 08-17-2002, 01:39 AM wolfman, how did you end up wiring the system? *Did you use a long ethernet cord or decided to go wireless?
LicknOutaTheCatsDish 08-17-2002, 09:02 AM Once you have broadband you never go back * * *period
Bartman 08-17-2002, 10:41 AM I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet but cable is always on you should get yourself a firewall program to keep the snoopers and hackers out of your computer, you can get a free program from a company called Zone Alarm that will do a good job you will be amazed at how many times someone tries to access your computer, I bought the Norton internet security program it has the firewall, anti-virus and it blocks all those annoying pop up ads too.
highlandergerman 08-17-2002, 03:52 PM thanks i always have the firewall up.
sledcrazy 08-17-2002, 04:01 PM cable where i am used to be good, then everyone got it and now it sucks, its road runner. *now i use verizon dsl, its WAY faster, but still not nearly as fast as people explain it. *i do tests and get like 1mb a second, but downloading something is only like 150kb a second. *and on kazaa or morpheus it takes a little while for a song to DL.

We have a wireless bridge that connects both of our wired networks. *The distance between our houses was over 600 feet with the routing we were going to have to do, which also crossed two other properties, so we couldn't set up a wired connection.
If you are considering a similar setup, avoid D-Link components. *We literally set them up where we could see the "far end" access port, and still couldn't get them to sync up and run. *This was despite an advertised 1300 foot range. *We're estimating a direct distance of approximately 400 feet.
NDMtnSledder 08-18-2002, 03:03 AM Wolfman I've been considering wireless. *What brand do you have now and hows it been working for you.
Wolfman 08-18-2002, 10:18 PM We bought linksys wireless access ports. *With our setup, we required two of them to make the bridge. *They synched up and ran perfectly as soon as we got the software installed. *We haven't had it up very long yet, however it has not missed a beat yet. *The distance that we're covering represents about 1/2 of its advertised limit. *We did need to insure that we had a good line of site for the units.
It is awesome. *I had long since been accustomed to spending two days (10 hours actual d/l time) downloading a two hour radio program every weekend. *This weekend, I had it done in 20 minutes!! http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
The linksys units got a best buy rating in PC magazine, so I've been told.
Avoid D-Link components. *We fought with those for three weeks before giving up on 'em and taking them back. *Even their tech support was stumped.
Are you trying to set up within your home, or between houses?
NDMtnSledder 08-19-2002, 02:48 AM Were looking at setting up in an apt between a couple computers. *It gets annoying setting up cables when your moving all the time and you can't do much other than lay them across the floor and cover them with tape or somthing in an apt.
performancex 08-19-2002, 01:52 PM whoever asked how you can find out how fast you connect, just go to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
performancex 08-19-2002, 01:54 PM i just scored a 290.1 kbps
Sled Dogg 08-19-2002, 02:13 PM I just scored 1.3megabits per second. My hard drive file sharing was at 163.1 kilo bytes per second. My 1MB file d-load time was 6.3 seconds. I guess I'm sreaming this morning, and this is with cable. *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Caleb
Steven Hohman 08-19-2002, 04:40 PM I just scored 1.6 megabits per sec, 197.2 kilobytes (The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.) and 5.2 seconds (The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.)
