I feel like a rookie trying to work on a 2 stroke.

The problem I am having is when I run from 1/2 to full throttle the machine bogs down and spits and sputters. I cant get over 50mph out of it. If I am at a stand still and I hit full throttle this thing will lift the skis but in about 3 seconds spits and sputters as well. Being I can get full throttle like that I am thinking a fuel delivery problem.

I went through the tedious task of removing and cleaning the fuel pump. It looked really good but I cleaned it anyway. I also disabled the TORS and Cleaned the carbs.

I talked to a friend of mine that has a banshee he had a similar problem with that. He suggested checking the carb boots so i did that as well.

Lastly I played with the needle jet a bit and didn't see much change. When I bought this I was told it has an aftermarket pipe so I was expecting a larger main but it is a 310, they had just dropped the needle to the lowest setting. As I leaned it out with the needle it didn't help one bit, except i think it was heating up because after about 15 minutes it started bogging in the low end a bit which it hadn't done before.

Any suggestions?
New Fuel pump maybe?

Les,

Have you pulled and replace the fuel filter in the tank? I had a similar problem like that last year, pulled the filter, it appeared to have good flow through it, but I went ahead and changed it anyway (like you I had checked everything else) and my problem went away! Forgot to add one thing, as far as your jetting, stock main is a 320 with the needle clip set in the middle notch. Depending on your altitude and exhaust system you may have to rejet. What are your plugs looking like in terms of color?

Well I changed the fuel filter, rebuilt the fuel pump, went through the carbs again, pulled the exhaust and looked at the cylinders for giggles and they look awesome. 5 hours of work later it was doing the same thing then boom out of nowhere it was running like a top. 5 miles later I parked it for 10 minutes and after restarting it it ran like a steaming pile of crap again. The plugs are really black and I have been changing them after every "repair" I make. I am thinking it is getting to much oil. Is that a possibility? Might be time to have a pro look at it or I might try bypassing the oil injection and premix it. What is a good ratio 32:1 or 40:1?

Les,

Generally the oil pumps are trouble free, on a few occasions they have craped out, but very seldom. If you are considering premix I would go with 40-1. Did you read the post by Jay about the carb problem he was having and finally located the cause in his choke cables? Just a thought, anyways hope you find the problem. These machines have a habit of making an old man out of you very quickly or will send you to a mental institution totally insane.

Good Luck and would like to hear from you if you locate the problem!

Finally!!!! After 40+ hours in the last week of working on this sled I finally made the 15 minute repair it needed. The moron who owned this sled before me (AKA my service manager) had the choke cables too tight and was feeding way too much fuel into the beast.

I am now proud to say I am the owner of a 1992 Exciter 2 570 :D This beast is in almost mint condition with 1800 mile on it. The best part it only cost me $500! Plus $5 for the unneeded fuel pump rebuild kit.

Dhall thanks for your help!! You are the kind of guy I like to see around!

funny how we overlook the obvious,,,, I ended up replacing a cylinder and piston because I didnt put a little raquet ball sized piece ball back under the pipe when I put it together,,,, man I could kick myself in the a$$ for that one!!!!

Hmm well it was running great till tonight. I rode over to the lake and blew the belt at about 80. I made a big mistake and wasnt carrying a spare. Had to hump it 5 miles to the house and got a belt from the store. We rode my quad back over and the sled was running like a pile of crap again, it was windy and snowy so I dont know if I might have gotten some snow in the air box or something. Oh well supposed to be in the 50's the rest of the week so I think the sledding is over me for the winter. I will be riding and 02 ZR 800 next winter and have the yammi for a loaner.
