Well my misfortune of a cracked chaincase turned into a blessing when it gave me the opportunity to hitch a ride on a 2004 Ski-doo Elite.
It had been brought to our Snowarama run to give our "Timmy" (one of the Easterseals poster boys) a ride. I escorted the Elite back to the club house with a fast dropping chaincase fluid level. Once back I thought I was through for the day but the Owner of the Elite wanted a more exilerating ride so off we went
It feels a little strange at first opening a door to get in and sitting down beside the driver, but it was a much nicer view. He cranked up the tunes and off we went. He said I didn't need to put on the seat belt. I was second guessing myself about not doing it up not far down the trail.
It runs smooth, and I was surprised to see how fast we were going when I looked over at the speedo. The weight is all behind you so you don't get the same bounce of a conventional sled. It carved through the trails nicely.
Travelling in and out of some of the ditches on the way to the river you'd think that you have to lean to help it in staying level but that is not the case. It is more in what I would expect of a tank would behave.
Once on the river he opened it up and off we went up to 125kph :blahblah: in no time. Not quite as quickly as the 583, but what really got me was how this thing would go around the corners as we went up the river.
You can still blow a belt, and we did while running full out. Just shredded it. Takes a little longer getting into it but it is not bad. Things get pretty hot back there. You get a lot of attention and it is not even Yellow when you are diving one of those.
After riding 2 up in the Elite I would take that than 2 up on a conventional sled anytime of the week. Seats aren't bad, you have room to move your feet around, can hear the music and converse up to 60-70 kph.
If spending 23,000 -25000 cdn for a two person sled isn't going to hurt your pocket book too bad than this is definitely a sled you should consider looking at.
Will post my driving impressions if there is interest.
I would like to thank Whim, from the Orangeville Snowmobile club for giving my family and my self a once in a lifetime opportunity of experiencing a ride on a BRP Elite
