Well my misfortune of a cracked chaincase turned into a blessing when it gave me the opportunity to hitch a ride on a 2004 Ski-doo Elite.
It had been brought to our Snowarama run to give our "Timmy" (one of the Easterseals poster boys) a ride. I escorted the Elite back to the club house with a fast dropping chaincase fluid level. Once back I thought I was through for the day but the Owner of the Elite wanted a more exilerating ride so off we went

It feels a little strange at first opening a door to get in and sitting down beside the driver, but it was a much nicer view. He cranked up the tunes and off we went. He said I didn't need to put on the seat belt. I was second guessing myself about not doing it up not far down the trail.

It runs smooth, and I was surprised to see how fast we were going when I looked over at the speedo. The weight is all behind you so you don't get the same bounce of a conventional sled. It carved through the trails nicely.

Travelling in and out of some of the ditches on the way to the river you'd think that you have to lean to help it in staying level but that is not the case. It is more in what I would expect of a tank would behave.

Once on the river he opened it up and off we went up to 125kph :blahblah: in no time. Not quite as quickly as the 583, but what really got me was how this thing would go around the corners as we went up the river.

You can still blow a belt, and we did while running full out. Just shredded it. Takes a little longer getting into it but it is not bad. Things get pretty hot back there. You get a lot of attention and it is not even Yellow when you are diving one of those.

After riding 2 up in the Elite I would take that than 2 up on a conventional sled anytime of the week. Seats aren't bad, you have room to move your feet around, can hear the music and converse up to 60-70 kph.

If spending 23,000 -25000 cdn for a two person sled isn't going to hurt your pocket book too bad than this is definitely a sled you should consider looking at.

Will post my driving impressions if there is interest.

I would like to thank Whim, from the Orangeville Snowmobile club for giving my family and my self a once in a lifetime opportunity of experiencing a ride on a BRP Elite

Is that you in the first picture? Am I the only one that sees a striking resemblence to the Prez of the USA?

Sure looks like George W to me, especially with the facial expression! I saw the same picture in the other post and was going to reply as to the resemblance in that one.

Cool pics, I always thought it'd be fun to take one of those things for a spin in the right area.
What's the rule on riding those things on the trails in different states/provinces? I'm not 100% sure, but I think here in MI they're not allowed. Might as well try to put a trail sticker on a Sno-Cat... I'll add it to the list of things I need to by after I have my own 1000 acre piece of land in the snow belt.

Why on earth wouldn't it be allowed? I think as long as it's got a track and skis, and it's not too wide I don't see how they could keep you from legally riding it.

It is registered with the MTO as a snowmobile and has a current trail pass

They're the same width as a sled? The one I saw at the dealer sure looked a lot wider, about as wide as a Yugo...

Looks like a fun machine. With the speeds you noted , I think that would definatly launch off a snowbank , as pictured in another thread on site. Do you still need a helmet on these machines ? Just wondering ...

I'm sure it would be a blast to drive, but have to admit it sure seems weird! Quiet enough to listen to a stereo?? Now people will be complaining about the loud music instead of the loud pipes!! :D

I'M not sure on the kph to mph conversion but mine wil run 80 mph anywhere and i had it to 90 on a hard pack rd. and it's plenty quick. and it's a blast to ride or drive and yes it will jump snow banks very easy.

Do helmet laws still apply with that machine having seatbelts ,and roll over protection?

GHOSTRIDER

yes you need helmets and it is the same width as a regular sled and there is no helmet law for sleds

There has to be helmet laws in Ont. My friend was turning his sled around at the bottom of his driveway, and the O.P.P saw him ,and stopped , and charged him with a $110.00 fine for no helmet. He claimed he was on private property , and there comeback was the first 60 ft. or somthing like that was considered neutral ground, By our government. Anyways take care thanks for the info . I might have to look into getting one of those toys some day.
