Hey, just browsing the auto trader looking for a faster sled, and came across the '94-'95 zr 700's.....

whats the scoop? are they reliable motors? do they handle on trails good? fuel consumption? what top speeds are we looking at?? Powervalves yes or no??

Let me know! Thanks, Neil SWRules

They handle great, could use a little more suspension in the big bumps.
Relatively reliable - non power valve - gas pigs.
Tons of torque and good acelleration but most 600's will beat it.
The big 700 thumper is a little hard on clutches.
Watch for clutch failures and watch the rivets holding the tunnel and the jack shaft brackets to the bulkhead.
I had both a 94 and a 95 at one time, I loved them both.

Had a 1995.

Pros:
on-rails type handling, reliable engines, lots of torque & top-end, cool sound (twin pipes!), 101mph on radar, I thought they were pretty good on gas.....

Cons:
HARD on clutches, sub-par fit & finish (rivets DO fall out), no power valves, not enough suspension travel, heavy, Fox shocks need constant servicing, most newer 600's and even some 500's will beat it...

I really liked mine......probably would still have it if it hadn't gotten stolen. Now I've downgraded to a 580 - saving up for that F6.

I remember reading Supertrax Magazine in 95 or 96 and they just loved their ZR 700. The quote I recall was that the motor was as reliable as " farmer John's anvil". It was the sled that led to what they called 'trail power', which refered to having gobs of torque at trail speeds. 125 hp with twin pipes and great cornering abilities. Expect to spend more money after you buy a 10 year old sled, and that applies to any sled that age, but they could need nothing.

I have a ZR580 and the suspension was rough, even with everything rebuilt. I now have a suspension from an '02 ZR800 and I love the ride. The only other thing I don't like about my 580 is the throttle. If I do a 100 mile day, my thumb/wrist/hand is shot.
