Yeah okay, common sense over valor and six pictures of puddle jumping across, I am assuming, somewhere on Georgian Bay. Personally I no longer have the nerve, actually never did, but makes for a good photo so whatever turns your crank as they say. Glad to see you guys had a good ride, did you make Giants Tomb??

I've done several water crossings but after you see a few people go down you start to think twice. All it takes is a few drops of water on your clutchs and down you go (what a helpless feeling), thats not to say I wouldn't do it again though :lookaround: .

yep,it's amazing how many guys sink there  went back out on sunday and sure enough, one of the show-offs sunk a nice black ski-doo. usually,it's only the people who are showing off sink.the ones who just want to make it to the other side have no such problems. i go there just for the entertainment of it all. .....................

I can't believe that people would take those kinds of risk, just for adrenaline kicks. The thought of a helmet full of icey cold water and the panic setting in is enough to keep me away, far away. When people do stuff like this, I honestly could care less if they die. They would be up for a Darwin award in my book, I just get p$ssed off that I have to fork out more for trail passes and insurance each year for their death wish.

To me, doing water runs is no different then running across the hiway, playing chicken with trains or driving while intoxicated. I just didn't expect adults to be doing this sort of thing.

I have a question having never run on water or go through the ice (I pray It never happens) how in the heck do you get the sleds back out. Do people just run on shallow water? If so who dives in to hook the sled up? How deep can you recover a sled from? Running water will never be my thing but if people want to do have fun.

Crossing water is a hoot, and as people have said, really the only way anything bad ever happens if when people start to show off, or if you have a mechanical breakdown when you're too far from the edge to make make it.

As Andy said, you can pull up to the edge of the ice, stop completely, and just gun it. As long as there are no rocks to worry about you'll be fine. I've got a friend with an XC 500 and the things that guy does on water would blow your mind. He'll start at the edge like I talked about, then drop throttle half way across until it looks like he's sunk, and nail it again, just barely bringing it to shore. Impressive.

I've had two close calls. The first one involved an exploded primary clutch about 2 minutes ride after crossing a water hole. Talk about luck. The second involved showing off, trying to do a water wheelie across a stretch that I had just opened up, and had lots of pans of thin broken ice. Trust me, you don't get near the traction on ice as you do on water, and if there's ice there keep you entry speeds high.

Anybody who rides off groomed trails NEEDS to know how to do this kind of stuff. Nothing worse then being in a situation where you have to cross an open stretch and have no confidence to do so. Can get yourself in big trouble like that.

Powder I didn't see any pics of water wheelies. That's the most fun I've ever had on water, and actually once I discovered that it ruined the fun of just shooting across. That looks like a nice spot to play though, and the depth is about perfect. Too deep and you're asking for trouble, and too shallow and you run the risk of rocks and stuff. That's no fun at all.

Awsome pics. guys, and gals. looks like that was a blast. I have sunk a sled at night , scary stuff. It was on a late night run on Dickey lake, we turned around a point into the mouth of a river that leads into Lake of islands. The snow white, turned into water black. I hit the brakes, big mistake .Ended up in the water. My buddy pinned his sled , and floated across. I had no one there to help me, I got lucky. My buddy had lots of experience crossing water , And it showed. He didn't panic , unlike me. I have since hit lots of open water , and gained what I call experience , so I at least next time the water will be crossed, not swam.

Nice pictures but play safe, we don't want to read about anybody!! I've been in the water before and not by choice.

Here's a vid from last week. It was a little late in the day and my buddy with the camera is no George Lucas, so it's hard to get a real feel for the water there.
What really bites is that there's no sound. I was a little too nervous to play too much because I didn't know how thin the ice was on the approaches, and the narrow cahnnel could be a problem wheelying because I haven't mastered turning (or going straight) yet. But I did drop throttle three times coming across just to see how slow I could go.

It's a great spot for it though. It's on Turtle Lake I believe, and so narrow that if you were to lose it it would be easy to get to shore, and easy to fish for the machine with a grappling hook.

Wow, that is some pretty serious water. I had my first experiecnce crossing open water last night, unintentionally.

My wife and I went for a quick spin on a local lake. Went right at dusk, and didn't get much riding in before the sun went away. No big deal, we've ridden these lakes before. Sure I haven't been out lately, since our snow melted away a while ago. But yesterday we got about 4" of new stuff, and I had been seeing sleds out on the lake all day. I figured a quick run after the Daytona 500 was done would be a nice way to end the day.

So we rode around the first of the 3 lakes for a while, not too fast as it was my wife's first time out this year, and she just wanted to get used to the machine again. Just following tracks around the shoreline, slipping and sliding a bit on the ice beneath the snow.

There was a quad pulling a tube around on the bay as well, so I decided maybe it was time to ride over to the other connected lakes. I was leading the way, and approached the channel where the bridge for the highway passes over, and could see there was no snow under ther bridge. What I couldn't see until I was right upon it, was that the first 10-12 feet was open water. That was quite a surprise, and the fact that there were so many other tracks heading under the bridge made me let my guard down a little bit.

You know that moment when you stop really thinking and just react?!?! That was it for me. Knew there was no way I could stop or turn away, so I just went with it.

Lucky for me, my wife is a slower rider and content to putt along behind me. Part of that was what had me worried because I knew at her speed there was no way she could make it across. Fortunately for me she saw the water splash when I hit it, and stopped, thinking she did not want to try what I just did. Of course i had no way of knowing what she was thinking, I was so worried aout getting stopped and waving her off. When I saw her turn away and ride off to the side, I breathed a sigh of relief, and then realized that the only way I was getting back was to go the way I came. When I had to PLAN on the cross, I started to get a little worried. Especially since I didn't know what happened on my first pass, did I open up more water or anything?

Well, nothing that more throttle can't cure, I figured. I hit the crossing much faster on the return, and didn't even realize I left the snow and ice. It was a pretty cool feeling once I thought about it after I was back on the other side.

Made me realize that I had never really had the talk with her about what to do in some situations. This was defiinitely one of them.

I know that my little crossing is nothing to get too excited about, people have gone over much longer stretches. But it was something I never had much interest in, and had never seen in person until last night. But to be honest, I'd be OK with not having to do that again. . . .

After you sink, its not so much fun. Just don't get cocky.
