Stock AMD 700 MHz here, 384 mb Ram, 18 G HD and Voodoo 3DFX (add-on), performs like Dell's 1 GHz (seriously) *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif * http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I have been building custom PCs since my first own.. It's the best! I'm still using the case I had back then (for a backup PC tho) and a lot of parts.. It might be more expensive to buy but in the end I think it's cheaper because I never buy a new PC, I just exchange some parts. And as Wolfman said it's nice to know what's under the hood http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Although I must say it gets complicated when you have 5 PCs and a million spare parts http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif I decided to put together a nice system from my junkyard and I couldn't remember which case contained what and wether it was broken or not http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif And then I don't even talk about harddrives.. I hate when they don't print the size of it on those things.. I have some drives that look exactly the same, just a bit difference in the model number.. but no idea which is what http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

On my second Dell. P4 1.8 g , 512 m RAM, 40g hard drive replaced my Dell that was stolen 200 MMX w/ 4g hard drive. What a difference. I think the clowns that stole it are using it as a door stop. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif

Custom at work. *At home I had a Dell with a 700P3, 128ram, 20Gig drive, zip and cd-rw. *Then lightening struck the weekend after the 4th of July. *Fried our computer (mother board) and our cordless phone/answering machine. *Obviously came in thru the phone line, which I didn't have routed thru the surge protector. *Doh! *Paid almost 2 grand for the computer 2 years ago. * Now a comparable system costs about $800, so between that and replacement cost of the phone less our deductible we got a check from insurance for about $950. *Best option? *Fix/upgrade the Dell. *As soon as all the parts arrive and I get it together, it'll have a 1.55 mhz Athelon, 512ram, and the addition of a DVD drive. *So should I have voted Dell or Custom?

Mines custom. *Seems no one want's to put all the bests parts of the comp 2-gether. *I fixed that *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Looks like I'm the lone Gateway owner for now, don't think I would buy another though. Just replaced the hard drive on it after only 1 1/2 years, and I wasn't real pleased with their Service Dept. either. *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif *Use *Dells at work, probably what I will get next time.

Zrgreen, I'm really happy with the performance of my Dell 8200. I also went from using Windows 95 to XP. Boy was I ever behind the times. Whoever stole my Dell XPS200, about the only thing it's good for nowadays is a doorstop. & the laptop you took, the motherboard died last year http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif

This machine is finally set up well enough to mention:

Living room PC:

Pentium II 350
1 gig main, and 10 gig secondary drive using onboard sound card
ATI Raedon All In Wonder video card
100Base-T network card
Sound hooked up to Yamaha Receiver with homemade speakers
Video is fed to a Sony Wega 34" television.
Cordless keyboard.
Remote control that doubles as a "mouse"

PC function is to channel all digitally stored home video, satellite, and DVD to the TV as well as channel all sound & music into the home entertainment center. Oh and it makes for some really nice PC gaming as well.
:D

This machine is still a temp machine though. I have a Pentium III 650 processor that I need a slot 1 motherboard for. It will then replace the PII.
