I'm kind of looking for a second sled, to be used primaraly by my girlfriend. I've always loved the look of the SXr, and there was a time when I would've loved to have an SXr 500, moreso had they made the same power as the Polaris/AC 500's of the same year.
Anyway, I know I like the looks, I'm sure I'll like the handeling, and I'm pretty sure the ride will be ok.
What I'm wondering is, how is the handeling? Is it twitchy and quick steering, or stable and steady. If the gf is going to be riding it, it'll need to be stable as I don't want her to get nervous. I'd rather she have to slow down for the turns a bit more.
What's the reliability like? It will of course be a used sled (found one for 2900 with 5400km) so I won't have a warrenty.
Finally, if I take it for a day for a romp through the twisties, will I be amused?

The sled is very nice to ride. It does not jerk alot. It turns really easy(if your talking about one that is around the year 2000). The sled is a good sled for anyone older than 16 and has been (at least) riding on the back of another sled. If you have anymore questions email me. Oh ya. 1 more thing. The sled is very light. So its easy to pull out of places like snowbanks.

Oooh yeah forgot to ask will that Vmax 4 still do 130 MPH at 1/2 throttle.

NB,

The chassis is very similar to mine - old school. But as long as the trails are nicely groomed (which they usually are up in North Bay), that machine would be a real good choice - very easy to handle and very predictable. That's what I like about my SRX, when the trails are smooth, it's real hard to beat through the twisties. Now, when the going gets rough - that's another story.... And it's likely to be reliable as a Swiss watch.

Well the trails haven't been so smooth up here this year. Pretty choppy most of the time, and I'm glad I have long travel suspension instead of the old XCR.
Actually I imagine the SXr to be like a better XCR. Excellent handeling, nice power without being intimidating, light and fun to ride.
The XCR is available if I wanted to buy it back, but for a new female rider I don't think it's the best choice, and for some reason it seems to be alot twitchier then I remember it being when I owned it.

Hossman (and anybody else who might know) How do you think the SXr would compare to an XCR600 in terms of ride and power?

500 eh? What's the fuel economy on that engine. If its anything like my Venture 500 beware!

I don't know about the feul economy, but I went down to have a closer look today. Started it up, and what a nice sound it has. A real pretty crackle.
It does look like it needs a new track though, so I told the guy I wanted to look around for a used track to see how much I'd have to spend.

Does anyone know how big a lug can comfortably go on this sled. I'm thinking a 1" with 96 studs would be about perfect for it.

One thing I don't understand about Ontario is why dealers leave the sleds outside all the time. The three used sleds at this place are completly covered in salt because they're parked on the side of a busy road, and at POwer Sports they have a 2000 XC 600 that has been sitting there for months. THe plastic is getting faded and the machine is getting all rusty. Seems a real shame to let sleds sit outside in all kinds of weather, and it can't help them sell.

The fuel economy isn't the greatest on the SXR 500. It's a twin cylinder engine. Yamaha's SX600, SX700, SRX 600, and SRX 700 all get better mileage. If mileage is a big concern for you get a SX600 or SX600R. That may be too much power for your girlfriend though. You will both be satisfied with either the 500cc or 600cc though IMO.

I have a 99 500 VMaxC... I absolutely love it... 6500 km on her now and I still consider it brand new... Keep up routine maint like driveline bearings etc and it will perform like a champ... Handling is great too... Rails corners with confidence...

As for gas mileage, I've had anywhere from 7 to 15 mpg... Since I have learned to accelerate smoothly and not slam throttle to the bar from corner to corner, mileage went up astonomically.... (TempaFlow helps too)..

If this one went missing for any reason, I'd look for another just like it.....
