I have a 91 exciter II. last night on the lake i had the chance to open it up and was disappointed to see that my top speed was 80 mph and only 7000 rpms. i think the problem is with my clutch. I read in a post that the clutches on these sleds were junk. a recomended replacement was a comet 108c clutch. is this an after market clutch? where can i get one? also is it possible to use a clutch off of a newer sled for replacement? if so what model/year? any help would be great!!

A Comet 108c is the correct clutch for an Exciter, just make sure it is the corect 108c model to fit one as there are several. I have heard lots of positive things about Comet clutches, Im sure if set up right it would perform better and probably be more reliable than the stock Yamaha (YPX or something?) primary. You can buy them from several retailers. If I remember correctly a brand new one is around $300 from Dennis Kirk. I missed a used one off a '92 exciter that went for I think $180 on ebay. A clutch off another model might work, but I have no idea what you should look for. Im positive my sled does over 80. I havent looked at the rpms but it seems to be screaming pretty high. Maybe your secondary clutch needs work? Mine had a cracked spring. My primary still sticks occasionally but this does not affect top speed, only take off. I suppose the primary could be not engaging completely and this would limit speed. I would still look into the secondary being the problem though. Also stuck idler wheels or bearings, sliders, or something in the drivetrain/track area could be slowing it down.
