It has come that time to upgrade and I am stuck on where to start or what to look at, I am coming from a 1990 Indy 500 that has been great to get started on and has never let me down. My price range is 1500-2500, I do most of my riding on trails, I am looking for something that handles good, has a good amount of performance, I can have fun with, and the little things like storage and such arent that big of a deal. Also I am pretty sure that I am looking for a twin 500-700. Thanks for any help.

I have really been looking at the pro x's and MXZ'S, Is there anyone that can tell me a little about them and what to stay away from there are qoute a few MXZ's for sale in my area. I might be willing to spend a little extra for one, but not above the 3500 range.

Have you looked into the 583's? that engine is just about bulletproof and has more power then your 500. when I got my sled the guy had an 800 a 583 and my Formula. I wanted something light to throw around so the 800 triple was out. I almost wish I had gotten the 583 now, I didn't because it was purple and a little heavier. They were both in about the same shape. You should be able to get a 97 583 with lower miles and still have some left to do any minor repairs. Not sure how new you want.

Well.. I see you live in NY however I have a 2000 mxz 500 trail long tracked this past fall, 6,000 miles.. lots of goodies on this sled. Only selling because we are getting new... 2,200 Pic is right here..

Or, you can have that 97 formula 500deluxe in my Avatar for 1,000 It has just under 7,000 miles on but is an excellent running sled. Now here's the deal.. You can have both for 3,000...LOL Formula is studded the mxz is not.

From experience, I can tell you that a Ski Doo with an S2000 chassis will beat you up on the trails. They're quickly becoming dinosaurs. My brother's owned a couple and I have several friends that are trying to sell theirs right now. To me, a wiser choice would be something like a 2000 ZL600 EFI. It has a much better suspension and you can find one with about 4000 miles for around $2000......and you'll love the batteryless EFI. I'm not trying to bash Ski Doo's, just speaking from experience. My friends on their S2000 chassis sleds can't keep up with the rest of us on the trails. The later Ski Doo chassis (around 2000 or so maybe) might be better, but I don't have any experience with them.
You are coming off of 1990 technology though, so a 1997 Ski Doo will probably still be a big upgrade, but the above mentioned Cat would be an even bigger upgrade for around the same price. Again, not trying to bash here, just my opinion. Good luck finding a sled.

I say try a ZR6 or 700. I think you could get one fairly cheap but they are alot faster than your indy. If you dont like cat and want doo a ZX chassis mxz would work and if you want poo well Pro-X I suppose.

If you are trying to determine between brands you might want to look at what your friends ride. It is always nice to know somebody that has done the same thing on their sled. I got a doo primarily cuz it is what all my friends wrench on, and ALL sleds need wrenching not just Doo's. just something else to think about when shopping between brands.

Kowalks is right though the SC 10 suspension on the 90 doo's, they do leave a bit to be desired, on groomed trails though they handle really well, stutter bumps... ouch. But I haven't been on the others to compare.

ZR600s are very nice pretty quick it should run with a stock 500ss or older doo 600 it wont be an F6 but they are pretty quick. You might want a yammi if your buds have yammi but I dunno maybe like an SXR6 or 700 or if you ride smooth trails SRX6 or 700. Or if you wanna beat em go ZR lol.

You can get a good low milage 2000-2002 zr500 600, or maybe even 700 in that price range. a 7 for 3500 might have a little more milage.
They'll feel like they have power steering in comparison to the sled youre on now, and with the fasttrack suspension itll be smooth as hell.
But im biased toward Cat :)

Yammyman is right. The Cat 600 motor that's in the ZL's and Zr's is a pig on gas and oil. My 800 does better than my buddy's 600.
Speed wise, they're ok. But a Doo 583 runs stronger. I don't think many people can argue that fact.
