Has anyone even started thinking about doing some pre-season wrenching? http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif

I am starting tomorrow probably. Gotta clean carbs, re-rivet the sway bar (ouch) and possibly replace the belly pan (can't remember how bad it burned. Also need to re-do the seat, replace a brake lamp and..hmm....what else...oh yeah...replace both shocks in the skid along with the hifax and carbides. You sure you don't want to scrap it and get a new one. *All I have to do is clean the carbs.

My 500 for the first time since i bought it in 1998 needs some TLC.

I need to change some idlers and bearing and a plug wire, so ill probably just change both to NGK racing wires. *

Im also gonna clean the carbs for the first time and maybe check the rave valves. *I checked them at 7000km and they were still really clean and slid really really smooth. *I owe castrol syntec there. *

Not bad for 9000 somthing km.

I put the NGK racing wires on my ZRT, not a bit of difference.

THanks. *Ill price out the stock ones and then see what the NGK R wires cost. *

The Race wires are Red which looks cool but they grab the plug using the threads not the traditional top part.

I think the main advantage is that it is far less unlikely to have a plug wire pop off. *Also if the wire is better it will offer less resistence and save your coil and stator.

Been ready for the last 5 months! Hope to get a ride in before deer season. Last time that happened was 95, it was 5 days before deer season with 18" of snow. You would'nt believe the different ways people set up deer camp. Stopped at one camp asking for directions and we drank all their beer[they would'nt quit giv'in it to us] what can I say!
Here in michigan, if you cant ride before Nov.15 you might as well put her away until Dec.1st. You can ride after dark but you would be taking your life in your hands.
One thing I would like to do to the sled is find a 70 link chain to give it a more straight approach, I put in lower gears and the tentioner is really stretched out. Does anyone know of a master link I could get? 13 wide doo chain, dealer say's they dont make one.....

I've been changing my sled into a wanabe REV *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif *I've put some handle bar risers (3 1/2 inch) and I custom made something to jack up the seat 4 1/2 " and push it forward about 8-10". It has the same feeling as you get on the REV, legs are less inclined. I'll have to put a higher windshild and something to cover the handlebars from the wind. *I'm cleaning carbs and will try to go 26-40 on gears.

Let's see. I've had the carbs and reed cages out for the past two months. Had to double check the replacements the dealer put on my 01 MXZ 800. The head is off and has been sent to RK Tek for his sleeper head conversion. RAVE valves pulled, cleaned, and reinstalled. Pipe and Y-pipe off. Actually the Y-pipe is back on now after welding in ports for EGT probes and repainting. The clutches are off, disassembled, and cleaned. Brake fluid and chain case fluids changed. I will be installing a heel clicker kit next. I have installed a coolant temperature gauge and a Pyro 2000 EGT gauge in the dash. I haven't even looked at the front suspension or the rear skid yet. I guess you could say that I am anxious for winter!!!

I started on the July 1 long weekend. *Rebuilding the suspension, new (stiffer) springs, rebuilt shocks, new idler bearings all around, new sliders, then some cosmetic stuff. *

Pretending your 600 pound Zert is a ZR Cross Country leads to some expensive repairs!!!LOL

mikadoo,
*I recently helped a friend of mine regear his 93 zr580.
We had the same problem the dealer lists the next size down a 68. His chain was a 13/70. Did I mention he is cheap when it comes to doing repairs? We were able to shorten the chain. We used a center punch and tapped out 2 pins. removed a link and a half (one outer and one inner link set. We then tapped the pins back in. They could still slide out the end they were removed from, so we uned a center punch and peened the end of the pins so it spreads out. It looks and functions like normal. I don't see why it won't hold up. The other option is: if you dropped the top gear down by 2 or three, only go down 1 or 2 on the top and go larger on the bottom gear and run a stock chain. This is what I had sugested (like I said he's cheap). I'm curious what sled are you running and what gear ratio did you go with? I dropped the top gear down by 2 on my '01 mxz 700, and I say amazing results on the low and mid accelaration, for only $20.00. How did yours turn out?,

Really no need to do pre-season I bought a new sled. *but i do have to put new gears, studs, a windsheild, and clutch kit in. *The only problem is that is a polaris 440 prox and I have no specifications on it, therefor I cant buy anything for it. *Polaris told me the sled starts production Oct. 21 and it will take 4 days to produce the entire producton for the year. *I guess they only make like 1100 prox fans, and 1750 liquids this year. *Anyways, Im caught in a catch 22 until I get the sled or at least the specs.

This may sound kinda bad but its been several years since I have been into sledding. Back then (young, dumb and full-a....) we would just throw Stable in the gas tank and that was it. I didn't do any pre-season setups. That was some time ago and now I know I have to do a fair ammount of stuff. I am mechanically minded but don't know what to do. I just purchased a 98 XCR 600 with 800 miles on it. It was only ridden once last year. Ideas on what I should go through on it? Thanks guys *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

pulled the exhaust out of the Mach 1 the other day to gain a better vantage on my tunnel crease. *this was the first bit of wrenching i have done on the sled and felt good; better than the old Kawasaki at least http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

thinking about adding a B&B Eliminator exhaust can. *reduces the weight and adds 5 hp? *anyone try this?

mudweiser, my buddy shortened his chain like you did and blew his chain and case mid season and lost a weekend so I will not go that route. I have mechanical reverse that comes with a 44 bottom gear that cannot be changed so the top gear is my only choice. I have a 23-44 combo [1.91]. I'am running a 136x1 1/2 paddle track so I had to get her geared down to pull all the extra weight. It has awsome low & mid range but never got a chance to see what top end was as it was the end of the season and spotty snow conditions.
I found a 70 link chain at nelsons last weekend off a cat but it was pretty sloppy so I passed. I have a brand new 74 link that came with the reverse kit that I would trade for a 70, SOMEBODY!!!!!!! Stinking dealer wont trade!!!!!! And, yes, I'am too cheap to buy one! 72 on it now...

not much to do as only have 615 miles on ZR600/but have added VFII reeds/B&B can(which incidently sounds awesome and saves some weight)/clutch kit/shocks rebuilt/added some color *add ons/just need to throw on the new carbides and I'm ready to roll. *Just got the v-nose last Sat so I'm kind of making some personal touches to that now...always something to do, better to do now before the flakes fly. *As usual, I'll have buddies that won't even look at their stuff till Dec 1. oh well, they'll be the ones on a tow strap not being prepared.

Well this weekend I think I'm going to cut the grass around my sled, open the hood to scare the mice out of the exhaust, clean the bird crap off the seat, Install the old plugs from the year before, sweep the gravel out of the suspension,Try to lift track out of the mud. Top it up with the fuel from weed wacker, chain saw and lawn tractor. And if I have time empty the left over food out of the trunk from the Feb sled trip I took last season. *Should be just about ready to go.

I started in May put the sled up on the stand and started to check it over and make a few changes. It started with removing the suspension, track (1 1/4 preditor),engine, ski's.
Then I let it just rest for a month.
First I modified the rails to except 7 1/4" rear wheels (2002 red mtn cat),then had the rails Powder coated black and the rear sizors red, also had the front shock springs coated red.
Took the drivers to a machienest and had him true them up on the lathe.
Picked up a used D&D 711 kit with all the upgrades, pipe, quiet can,(coated).
VforceII reeds
Clutch kit
Last month I started to assemble it,just about finisheds.
By the way It is a 2000 Black ZR500efi, should be done in a few weeks,I'll have to take a couple photos and post them up for viewing.
Winter can't come soon enough.

Started a week ago, pulled the skid out, getting all four shocks rebuilt, getting all bearings replaced, sliders, one pipe welded up, tempa flow put on, clutch work, brake light switch needs replacing, and then start her up.

Here's a list of stuff I am going to do starting next month. I know its an 02 with only 1500 miles on it but I figure I would rather do it now than in the middle of the short season. Especially since I plan on getting in around 3000 miles this yr.
1. Rebuild shocks
2. Check all bogie wheels and bearings
3. Clean Carbs
4. Adjust Carbs as needed
5. Clean power valves
6. Adjust power valves
7. Go through clutch and rebuild as necessary
8. Change brake fluid and adjust.
9. Change gearbox oil
10. Adjust gearbox chain tension
11. Lube Chassis
12. Change Hyfax
13. Check carbide runners
14. Adjust track tension
15. Clean entire sled and wax
16. *Check choke adjustment
Maybe a few more to add. Just started the list.
