: T660 Turbo Touring Vibration
mariobross55 03-16-2005, 12:01 PM Hi..
Just a question for you guys.. My T660 Turbo touring 2005 got a good amount a vibration when the speed reach 60-70 mph... I check with some of my buddies who got the same sled and we do complain about the same problem... matter of fact I found my driven pulley loose on the shaft.... and realize that the shaft was worn out...I got 6000 miles on my sled now... loved it except fort that anoying vibration.... AC replace the shaft and the fixed sheeve on the warranty with the same component... so the problem is not realy fix... any comment on that...
Best regards

ZR006CatMan 03-16-2005, 08:14 PM I realy don't know for sure, cause I don't have one, But I have read, and heard alot about bolts coming loose in the clutch, or on take secondary. I would hope the dealer would have caught that, but they may have missed it. :-( Maybe just take a little look to see if anything is loose, or any bolts missing. I am sure some one else has had some more experiance with it.
ZR Sled Head 03-17-2005, 03:20 AM A riding buddy has the same problem with his '05, strange part is his '04 was much smoother at bigger speeds. He's been blaming it on his clutch kit but perhaps he best look elsewhere.
84EVR 03-18-2005, 07:38 AM I know another guy that runs one of the groomers in the UP that has one with same issue. He had a drive shaft break or something, and ever since they replaced the driveshaft, (he thinks with old bearings) it has had this vibration at higher speeds. He also had the loose bolts in the sandwich plate too. He has been dealing with a few different dealers. and now is dealing directly with Cat also. Interesting.
mariobross55 03-18-2005, 11:57 AM HI...
I am doing an investigation on that problem, since I had change my counter shaft , the bearing and the fix plate of the driven plulley... I realize that the bellt is seating almost away from the inside supporting housing ... :!: :!: That begin to make sense why is vibrating so much... Cat should have brought the inner housing up to side bearing so in that configuration the belt will be standing in the middle of the support housing instead of all the way out of it.... :lookaround:
I made a costom bushing holder, I will test ride today... Hope it will cure the problem.... :sarcasm:

Forester 03-21-2005, 10:46 AM I have two 04 t660 touring turbos and one of the sled had the bolt that held the secondary back out this caused sever vibration at moderate speeds. The bolt was reinstalled and no problems. I have ran both at 80 and faster have not experienced any vibrations (knock on wood). would be interested to see what your cause is.

Mario; I'm having a little trouble understanding what you mean, but from what I've seen on these sleds, this vibration starts when the rollers on the secondary pulley begin to wear out. This wear allows the secondary sheaves to spread too far and the belt runs too low in the pulley causing this vibration. Look very closely at the base of the secondary sheaves and you will see that the belt is actually erroding the aluminium.
I believe the cause of the rollers wearing out is that they are actually being damaged by exess heat from the turbo (which is very close by).
mariobross55 03-21-2005, 11:44 AM Hi....
As I state on a reply, I had made a mod to the driven pulley...and I can now say that all the vibration is gone away, I ride 500 milles with my mod on this week-end and I was realy please to ride without any vibration on the 60-70 milles per hour range. In my area I was not the only one complaining about that, AC have already change a few secondary shaft that were worned out because of that vibration.
As I said before the problem seem to be related to the offcenter from the bell running on the driven pulley related to secondary shaft. It is hard to explain but if you remove the secondary pulley and look at it you will realize that the coupling to the secondary is about 2 inches deep in the pulley, AC install a kind of a 2 inches aluminiun spacer on the secondary shaft to act as a shim to take care of that offset... so if you look closely you will find that the belt is running offset ot the fix sheave coupling .... that induce a torsion and a vibration that with time cause the shaft to wear out....I think... :!:

PS: If I can I will try to insert a small draft ...
700Rocket 03-21-2005, 11:57 AM Interesting that the secondary caused this, I would have bet it was a bearing on the drive shaft.

You could be right. One thing that I know for sure is that if you find a place to hold the throttle wide open, the belt on this sled will not last 75 miles. Maybe this mis-alignment is the cause of this.
I was at a Guiness record distance attempt, and this was a huge problem, until the pit crew figured out that replacing the Team secondary with a standard Cat from an F6 would help.
The underhood heat was also a problem for the team rollers too, they turned to mush.
