I bought a used '02 straight Indy and was severely smoked by an old '94 Indy 500.
I've done some real work on this thing and its still a dog. Changed the main jets down to 310's vs 340's stock. Put tri-helix in and upped the clutch weights to get the RPM down to 7900. The compression is 115/120 both sides.
I ordered a maintenance manual, back ordered for 6 weeks. Great, but finally came in and its the wrong one. It was a "XC" manual. I flipped throughout the pages and discovered that the 500 "XC" runs 38mm carbs and bigger main jets. So, again my question is, the straight Indy 500 different?
Any insight would be helpful.

I'm not sure what "severely smoked" means but I have a 2002 classic which runs the same 488 fuji engine as your indy. I don't know what the older 500 ran but the newer xc's run a "liberty" engine which would be alot faster than the fuji. Anyhow, I just got my 2002 classic and it moves out real good. I also have a 550 supersport which will do 80mph on a good solid trail. I'm thinking the classic would do at least 10-13mph better than the supersport. The difference between the two is like night and day.

We have a neighbour with a 97 Indy 500, and it's got the Fuji engine in it, very basic, no power valves but extremely reliable.

i ran my 02 indy 500 against an 04 500xcsp and only got beat by 3 sled lengths in 600 ft, though he should have done better against my little fuji. i love my 500 super reliabe and fun to ride. My wife has pretty much taken it over since i got my pantera.

When I say got smoked I mean off the line it was gone. We ran about 2 miles across a lake and he was 20 lengths or more ahead. We switch sleds, and his was so much more powerful. It is a stocker, because I know. Its my brother in laws back up unit. Nothing else done to it, STOCK.
Of course the '02 suspension is sweet, the machine is nice, but it does not rock, at least not like his. I believe there is a fundamental difference between the two. Are the engines different, i.e: Fuji vs. liberty?

If my calculations are right and he's got you by that distance over a 2 mile run he's got you by about 2mph--I wouldn't call that "severely smoked". To me 5 mph would be severely. That 2 mph could come from alot of things. Maybe a slight difference in gearing between the two sleds, clutch condition, slight rpm differnce, slide condition, wt of riders what have you--possibly even the difference in drag between the newer suspension angles than the older ones. I'd say "live with it" it ain't so bad. I'm 99% sure he had the fuji engine and the liberty engines didn't show up till around 2000 model year.

The Indy 500 has and always will use the 488 fuji motor. The XC uses a liberty engine, a much stronger motor.
