I removed the driven clutch on my 2001 xc sp 600 to grease the jack shaft I thought I had all the shims in place but it now has 1/8" side free play. Any body know what the correct amount of free play should be Thanks. John.

I believe that 1/8" of play is what you are supposed to have.

Thanks, that's good news, now I can stop looking for the shim that I thought I lost.

Your free play should be about .060" (one washer) but it is secondary to the offset between the primary/secondary clutches. This offset should be checked first and then the required freeplay be corrected after. I would suggest having a dealer check it with their alignment bar then do the freeplay. At 1/8" I'm thinking you do have a jackshaft spacer lost....

Not into racing, but have top end results similar to everyone elses, and have been running closer to 1/2" end play for many years. Everyone entitled to an opinion, but I haven't seen the need for any precision here. Alignment is a different issue...

free play isnt critical but alignment is.the free play keeps the side load off the bearing.
