: My Snowmobiling Trip To Nwt & Yukon
Bar2Bar 04-06-2005, 04:42 AM What a great week I had sledding in the NWT & Yukon. We did a couple of days riding in the Delta
where we found all kinds of deep powder. I'm not used to riding in powder and running over willows, it's
a whole different type of riding.
I got to ride a new Polaris Edge 550 LONGTRACK for the first few days and then a new REV 800 Summit for the
Yukon part of the trip - I have a new respect for both of those sleds. The Polaris was like brand new when I got it
and after 3 days the entire hood was full of scratches...I cringed everytime I went through a willow but apparently this
is expected in "Boondocking" type riding.
Took a break from sledding and then drove from Inuvik to TUKTUYUKTUK where I bought a Polar bear skin from one of the hunters.
The Yukon part of the trip was really cool as well, we went to Eagle Plains and rode the Red Rock rider up to this huge
bowl that had miles of untouched powder and huge slopes that went as high as you want. The snow was perfect powder and the
temps ran about -15 celcius. The REV Summit is one kick ### sled !!! I think the REV is going to be my next sled now :)
We ended up getting stuck in Eagle Plains due to heavy winds and snow so we stayed 2 nights
at the Eagle Plains Inn. Real cool place out in the middle of nowhere and home to area where the "Mad Trapper of Red River" was
finally gunned down.http://www.mysteriesofcanada.com/NWT/madtrapper.htm
All in all, fantastic sledding with miles of untouched terrain - if you're up for the long haul to get there.
permafrost 04-06-2005, 06:34 AM Bar2Bar, Wow what to say that must of been quite a trip! Did you drive all the way from Ontario? Does the outfitter have a website? How long did it take to get there? Wait until Team Pilsner sees this thread.

600EdgeGuy 04-06-2005, 07:45 AM That looks like an awesome time.
did you see any of those crazy guys from Yukon Powder Hounds? They do the Sled Porn videos up there somewhere.
CORY9 04-06-2005, 08:35 AM Awesome pics, looks like a great time!!
Obviously you rented the sleds, so if the hood gets all scratched up do they take away your security deposit?
zr580cat 04-06-2005, 10:28 AM Wow! Amazing! I would love to do a trip like that!

Start saving your pennies and go to the SW canadian rides. LadyK and others have picked some amazing places. In 07 I will be going To Newfoundland with them. Fly out and rent a sled, Newfiebullet might rent one cheap to me though.
Those are some amazing pics Bar2Bar, looks like you had a good time.

MXZOOoom 04-06-2005, 06:14 PM Awesome just awesome
Bar2Bar 04-06-2005, 08:13 PM Thanks Guys...and yes, the trip was unbelievable.
Rented the new Edge 550 for the first 3 days, it was cheap man..$120.00 per day and no, they don't get a hoot about scratches...it's all part of riding in that type of territory.
My buddies new REV came in and he basically let me ride it for the rest of the trip while he rode his '02 Polaris....kind of weird, he's not really impressed with the REV and prefers the Polaris...I was happy to relieve him of the REV :D
The YUKON kicks major ### !!! I have done some great poweder riding in B.C but it didn't compare to this. There was a section of flat ground that had so much powder you couldn't keep the sled upright...I could not believe it.
Anyways, I am going back next year for round #2 - we're planning on riding the ice road to Tuktayuktuk and Back (with on night in the TUK Inn)
DOO THE DOO 04-06-2005, 08:33 PM Thats sooo cool looking I would love to try that some time. How cold did it get there at night???...About Hotels how did the water systems and stuff work or do you know. I would think all water lines and stuff would freeze there??
paul yarek 04-06-2005, 10:58 PM that's great BAR thank you for sharing your experience and i know the icing for the cake would have been to meet ZOG.
MikeD 04-07-2005, 08:44 AM Thanks for posting those pics and the story. Please post more if you've got 'em ....... I couldn't possibly get more jealous
That's way farther north than the land of Team Pil! I've been there several times, but never by road. Long drive from here, too!
MXZOOoom 04-07-2005, 04:24 PM I hear its a dry cold!! So like -20c aint so bad ?? is this right?
I can only dream of going there .
That's true. As long as the wind isn't too wild, -20 is great weather.
Bar2Bar 04-07-2005, 05:57 PM -20 is a nice temperature but when the sun finally sets does it ever drop quick. One night it dropped about 10 degrees in less than 30 minutes. I have a couple of frostbite marks on my neck to show for it.
Bar2Bar, Wow what to say that must of been quite a trip! Did you drive all the way from Ontario? Does the outfitter have a website? How long did it take to get there? Wait until Team Pilsner sees this thread.
No, I flew on Airmiles from Ottawa-->Edmonton-->Yellowknife-->Norman Wells-->Inuvik (1.5 day travel)
The rental came from the only Polaris shop in Town - $120.00/per day
No Website that I'm aware of.
.About Hotels how did the water systems and stuff work or do you know. I would think all water lines and stuff would freeze there??
They work fine, no buildings have foundations, they are all built on stilts and covered and insulated...and headed of course.
Here's some more pics..
Great pictures. Glad you enjoyed yourself!
fufanu360 04-08-2005, 11:08 PM -20 is not cold weather, i go sledding in minus 30
